Why you never go under a vehicle with just a jack under it

More that half the people are afraid to get involved. Thank all the lawsuit lawyers for instilling that fear. With the number of people they had the car could have been lifted with manpower so the guy could be pulled out.
Autozone probably had many jacks in there that could have worked.

All states have 'Good Samaritan' laws.

It was once a big deal here because people were afraid to help traffic accident victims.

I have EMT training from working Ski Patrol for 20+ years. Since I have training it is also Law that I have to stop if I come to an accident and Medical help has not yet arrived. This is true for any person with medical training.

I think all good people coming on an accident where help has not arrived will jump in and help. Many times they do things that save lives.

In the video, that screw type scissor jack, is unsafe as hell and that is what the guy trusted to crawl under that vehicle with. Brave and stupid. all in one.

Scissor jacks should NEVER be used, if at all possible.

Follow up, just found this same post on Facebook, it was posted that the injuries were not life threatening. The guy lived??? Who would have guessed. He is lucky.

Wonder what was so important under a Mercedes to have him crawling under at Autozone.

I don't use Facebook but a google search took me to the story.

Jacks are designed/made to lift an item enough to get it cribbed/supported by jack stands or some other type of solid support. Having been a hydraulic pump mechanic for over twenty years I’ve seen some pretty stupid set ups. This one is bad, but I’ve seen a lot worse.

Some of the failures were due to putting fresh hyd. oil in a pump that’s old. The Annoline, a rubber softener, in the fresh oil seeps into the scratches, cracks of the old “O” Rings and turns them into “bubble gum” which can’t support the load and the jack fails. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen right away. It usually happens several minutes after the load is applied. Just enough time for someone to crawl underneath the load.

If you have an old pump that needs oil you might want to add vegetable oil instead of fresh hyd. oil. Of course the best thing to do is change out all the rubber components and “O” Rings.
