$250 labor to replace a steering gear box, pitman arm, and idler arm is a steal compared to the labor prices just for a steering box in my neck of the woods...$400 labor for just box I paid x3. Once from Chevy dealer twice from independent shop when I supplied my own parts. I would do pitman and idler arm and see how steering is...all remanufactured boxes I have dealt with sucked, they do however have ‘new ones’ on rock auto I would like to try one day.Oh, I also got the alignment yesterday, and now they say my steering box, pitman arm and idler arm need replaced. They want 250 plus parts to do it. At this point I'm just gonna drive it, and hope the tires last a little while. That's probably what I should have done in the first place.
Here's the front with 4 different colors of plastic, lol
Do not buy reman boxes, get a blue top or red top. They are a bit pricey but worth every penny$250 labor to replace a steering gear box, pitman arm, and idler arm is a steal compared to the labor prices just for a steering box in my neck of the woods...$400 labor for just box I paid x3. 250 has me questioning if it's even worth it to do it myself, lol.$250 labor to replace a steering gear box, pitman arm, and idler arm is a steal compared to the labor prices just for a steering box in my neck of the woods...$400 labor for just box I paid x3. You ain't kidding. I've been lucky none of those have gone bad. It's a matter of time thou.Don’t you wish the ones in the dash are as easy to replace?
I already paid them for the alignment, so they may have figured that in. They are predominantly Spanish speaking, So something could have been lost in translation tooIs the alignment included in that labor?
I did the recirc one last time. It’s up on top. The service manual says you need to remove the entire dash sub assembly but I found a video on how to cheat but it’s almost impossible to get to the screws like that. It took a lot of cussing and some blood. You ain't kidding. I've been lucky none of those have gone bad. It's a matter of time thou.
The redhead steering gears were a fail for me twice, literally 0 play & was very squirrly driving i actually felt very unsafe. They sent me another and it was the same thing. There was no ‘center’ which is what made it impossible to deal with as well. I would try a new edelmann or new lares from rock auto next if I got another. The GM remans got very sloppy after 5,000 miles as well.Do not buy reman boxes, get a blue top or red top. They are a bit pricey but worth every penny
In the booster. It has a weep hole where the case bolts together. Fairly common. There are 2 main gaskets there a figure 8 looking one for the case and a donut that seals around the piston. I pinched the figure 8 one time closing it up and I wrecked the other one another time. Didnt lube it up enough before closing it up. What I have noticed is there is definitely some variance between the brands.Power steering pump is the hydro boost pump so where was the leak?

With both remans and new being hit-or-miss, has anyone tried to rebuild their own? We can't do much worse than that. The redhead steering gears were a fail for me twice, literally 0 play & was very squirrly driving i actually felt very unsafe. If I had the skill, time, and tools I would try. I have a delco reman sitting in my basement with 5,000 miles on it just sitting in the box after getting a low mile oem from LKQWith both remans and new being hit-or-miss, has anyone tried to rebuild their own? We can't do much worse than that.
That appears to be it. Hopefully it's not too expensive--for a clip.I am thinking it's these.
Google “ GM brake switch retaining Clip”. Everybody loses them. They’re available at every auto parts store for about $5. Dorman makes a replacement.Anyone know where to find a replacement retainer clip for the brake pedal to booster rod/brake light switch? I lost the damn thing.
Some pics I found on the net that are similar.
The dorman ones I keep finding did not fit. 13808 iirc is the that part number.Google “ GM brake switch retaining Clip”. Everybody loses them. They’re available at every auto parts store for about $5. Dorman makes a replacement.
