Hey guys, I saw this recently and had some questions.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-5-Posi-10...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a802c0fe0&vxp=mtr

First, what is your opinion of these compared to other brands or other types of differentials? I've done some research, and would definitely do more before buying, but it seems I would want an LSD and this has a good price.

Also, someone said that it's almost impossible to get used gears to mesh correctly and run smoothly in a new carrier. Any idea if this is true?

Just looking for some input. It's my plan to build this truck up a bit in power, so I'm wanting to beef up the drivetrain before I do that, figured this would be a good place to start.

Just looking for something that will handle plenty of power, be relatively low maintenance, and also give good traction. Also, anyone know how noisy these usually are?

well that item was expired but it was a g80 factory locker and if you want to add one to a carrier dont use those ther are better ones out there the ideal one is a true-trac unit does not need rebuilding probably ever no friction disc so no oil additives needed. and engages smoothly so you hardly feel it happen. they sell for about $470. who ever bought that g80 setup may not have know what he was getting into or really desperate for stock parts because those parts were from the factory when vehicle was built. you can get used gear stuff to work but it is not ideal besides if you have a 3.42 gear know i would not bother unless you went 3.9's for a little extra oomph. any tire changes since built should be taking into account as well.

Thanks Sunlit, I was hoping you would chime in. I've heard of Detroit Truetracs, I just wasn't sure if that was the exact thing I was looking for. Sounds like it is. I'll definitely look into them more.

Some stupid questions to follow:

So this is what you're recommending? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dtl-913a481/overview/make/gmc

I'm assuming you have to use your own ring and pinion gears? I would probably go with 3.73's, simply because they seem to be a good setup for middle of the road performance/economy for a street truck.

looks about right and you do supply the gearing and ring bolts and new master install kit. which for the locker should require different bearing then a plain open carrier. there are other locker but they they actuate sometimes are not ideal for a most people such as unlock when coasting but lock when acceleration which will cause issues when you are accelerating in turns and stuff. and then there are ones that what for a certain amount of tire slippage to occur before going to a sudden lock.

oh you really do hear them as much as feel them. and when you hear them it is not a good sign. if you have not heard it before here is a g80 breaking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr_00EQBx7I&feature=youtu.be&t=1m30s

have you changed tire sizes or plan on carrying loads?

Well, I'm assuming that the TrueTrac is well suited for daily drivers?

I probably won't be changing overall diameter of tires (it's 2wd, and won't be doing any offroading). I might pull a trailer or haul a load of scrap every now and then, but nothing insane. Why, how would that affect the rear?

Yeah, I saw that summit recommended different bearings. I'll probably look around on other forums and research what people say about them so I know I'm getting exactly what I want. But since the TrueTrac operates similar to an open diff, wouldn't it basically behave like what I have now? Just better and more bulletproof?

Thanks for all the help. I've never messed with the rear end in this truck before. I know it's been replaced once, but now that I'm looking to increase the power, I figured it's best to start upgrading the drivetrain before it breaks.

yes perfect for a dd that wants a lsd device. was asking about tires so if a gear change was made it can take into account not just your requirements but any change to the tire sizing.
this the page from eaton: http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/Products...veAftermarket/Differentials/PCT_221471#tabs-2

here is a video demonstrating it function: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTXvH3T8Bsg

and while you might not even go climbing stuff like in the video pay attention to the description and notice how the black trucks wheels on left and right in the front (he has a true-trac in front and rear) lock together and react compare to the red dodge with no traction devices at all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZFVKFyOgqY

hopefully this helps you a lot in learning the ins and outs.

here are part manufacturers numbers for the 95 setup and some shopping links to get you started on price searching and comparison. everything below is top notch stuff. if installed correctly and taken care of it will be trouble free for a very long time.

yukon gear master hd overhaul kit for lsd setup: YK GM8.5-HD http://www.summitracing.com/parts/yga-14088

true-trac: 913a481 http://www.amazon.com/Detroit-Locker-913A481-Trutrac-Differential/dp/B003XJ2X78

yukon gear 3.73 gearset: YG GM8.5-373 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/yga-24158
