Hey guys, its been a while...i've been neglecting my forum :(. But i'm back and fall sports are over so i hope i can be on alot more often. I've read most of the threads about tune ups but my situation is a bit different so i need some input. I inheireted the Tahoe from my pops and he never had any of the maintance done except oil changes. So i'm at 161,000 and it has only had the engine oil changed its whole life. So i'm thinking plugs, wires, tranny fluid and filter...am i missing anything? how about the transfer case aswell? i have a loud clunking sound when i put it in reverse which the shop says is the transfer case. Thanks!

welcome back!

Oil, filter, fule filter, plugs and wires, cap and rotor, tranny fluid and tranny filter, and brake fluid, rear differencial.

Falling behind on regular maintenance , makes for a long list :)

It won't take you that long, just a long list lol. You could have it all done in a weekend if you don't sleep til noon on Saturday and Sunday.

There should not be a cap or a rotor on your motor... These motors have coil packs, not a distributor.

I would also check your drive shafts, if they have grease zerks, grease them if not, you may want to replace the j-joints.

okay thanks for all the quick responses guys! i miss it here...i'm going to try to get a video of that "clunk" tomorrow and post it up. its getting worse and its only when you put it in reverse.

I've heard u-joints being the cause alot of times with that clunk. It's alot cheaper to change those out than to have a shop tear into the TC.

...well i'm just going to try a u-joint, should i do it or is it a pain in the the ass?

Listening to a youtube video can be different (by many dB) than in person, but from what I heard, it sounds like my car, and it's normal for me (02 Yuk, 5.3 4x4) Just the tranny engaging the gear. Was the sound occurring when you change gears, into and out of reverse, or just into reverse from any other gear? From a diagnostic standpoint, you could do the maintenance stuff and then see if the noise is still there. Tranny fluid/filter and both differentials (assuming 4x4) is a must, but I'm **** about that stuff living in the desert. You may want to add coolant and power steering fluid flush to the list. Good luck.
