[SOLVED] 2006 transmission ?

So today took Tahoe. Stopped at 7-11. Couldn’t get in gear. When putting in park made grinding noise. Put it 4wd and got it moving. Got on road put back in 2wd. Then driving at 40 mph it went out of gear, then while coasting went back in gear. Put it 4wd and got it home. 2006 Z71 165K miles.
Over last few months service 4wd has come on intermittently.
Thoughts?

Sounds to me like 2 things have happened here.

1. You ignored the "service 4wd" warning. Really?

2. You have a transfer case problem.

Pull the drain plug and see what a sample of fluid looks like and post a pic here. Have you ever serviced the transfer case and/or transmission?

Yeah, check all your fluids first. The Tcase leaking fluid due to the "pump rub" issue is very common...

A transmission issue will typically manifest itself into slipping, which usually will have engine revving with delayed or no acceleration. Not sure if you have that or not?

Drained and filled Tcase fluid. The right volume and color. Inspected For cracks, leaks etc. no issues.
Taking it tomorrow to shop to check and replace encoder motor.

With fluid like that you're probably looking at more than just an encoder motor..

What did the shop say?

This does not sound like a Tcase issue to me. This sounds like valves in the valve body hanging up and they are likely like that from running in extremely dirty/worn tranny fluid OR maybe even a plugged up filter.

Thanks for any and all input. Encoder motor replaced. Have driven a few hundred miles since. No issues. No service 4wd. Bought this 2006 3 years ago. Since owning I have done all the fluid services. New waterpump, Exhaust manifolds, plugs, wires, brakes etc. 118k when I bought it. 168k now. At 65 I’m still learning and lovin’ it. These forums are a life line. Been doing maintenance way before cell phones and the World Wide Web : ). Sold my last (2005) Tahoe with 300k miles.
