Now, the only thing that concerns me about the OBDx Pro GT is if GM were to make certain protocols "required" and removed the "fallback" to modes that the OBDx Pro GT supports. They could do that at any time considering SPS2 is online only and in that case the Mongoose-Plus GM3 would be the "bare minimum" to support even existing vehicles if that were to happen.
I'm wondering if they can decide to end techline support alltogether! Say any vehicle without OTA updates is obsolete?
I heard there was a law that manufacturer's had to have replacement parts available for at least 10 years after manufacture..

very interesting stuff.. I was going to say yeah the developer seems active still. so it will probably get support as long as people are purchasing it. it also seems to work with some of the open source tuning software. so that alone should keep them going. I have hp tuners, but I would always perfer to support the open source side if possible. so if I was going to use a older ls1 ecm on a swap or something I'd definitely look into that over hp and it's annoying we only define what we think you want business model and offer basically zero support besides a few big shop tuners.

I don't consider 140$ to be to much to ask for a blue tooth dongle with elm327 support and the upsides of possibility flashing a module if I happen to need it.

I agree on the OBDx Pro GT. That is why I didn't feel too bad about taking a "knee-jerk" reaction to buying it when I was worried that the Mongoose wasn't going to be delivered.

The big issue with HPTuners is that I know they have certain things supported, but they seem to miss stuff people might need because they are always chasing the "next model to support"... They have always needed a "constant support" developer to expand support for existing models and then another team working on the "next big thing".

I mean I know for fact there is tons of stuff not mapped out in the Gen5 ECMs that they could do. Hell, they could even support a lot of the configuration stuff GDS2 does for other modules, like BCMs or TCCMs since it basically has the capabilities, they just need to map the configurations.

doing that would end the ability to repair a vehicle in certain conditions and take away a revenue stream for all party's involved.
I am sure they still make good money on subscriptions plus the older stuff is already fully developed, pure cash cow.

after they answered a few questions, I went ahead and ordered a OBDxpro GT to try.

if it works to flash modual for 140$, seems handy. it also works with tech2win but they didn't want to get into if it works with the cracked version that comes with the China tech 2's. it will work with the pay version you download form the acdelco site.

I'm curious if it works with what came with my clone tech 2.

I would imagine if the version you have is not "interface locked" then it should work fine. That is, unless it has interface requirements that are not "current", in other words, if the older versions of software only support older modes that the newer specifications no longer support that would be the only reason it wouldn't work.

Either way, please let us know if it works or not.

will do.. probably try later this week. I do have an email in asking if they have the drivers for my old xp laptop. believe thats what the cracked clone software works on. and I'd rather not load it on my newer one anyways if I don't have too haha. but either way I'm going to try updating some moduals soon as I get a few min. tech2win is more just a curiosity.

the issue with the nano's and any other cracked hardware/software is that
gm is aware of there software bieng cracked and the cracks that are out there are timed, so after say 3-4 months or maybe as long as a year, then you have to update
they fix the cracks and the hackers make new ones and finding those updates is sketchy at best like trying to skrew a crackhoor and not catch a std.
I use a dedicated dell windows tablet that has no personal info on it, no log in's or passwords, etc so even if there was a virus it wouldn't matter and if it crashed it or locked me out with a paywall or something I can just wipe it and start over
I also have a clone MDI and a MDI II, both are pretty much useless now because they can't be updated to work with GDS2 unless at some point in the future I find a outside update
the best solution I think is to get the latest hard drive with software out there and throw it in a lenovo laptop, the laptops are maybe a $100 used on ebay, the hard drives with software generally are plug-n-play with the slightly older lenovo laptops, then it may last a good while until you need it for a newer model vehicle. at least for diagnostics purposes, programming a module you have to pay and have the most recent software which is usually just downloaded with a paid vin account, there is no way around that, the only benefit is you can use pretty much any j2534 device provided it is updateable.
gm updates there software left & right and if your device cannot be updated then it won't work.
the mdi clones (the ones I have) are not working now because the new software requires you to enter the serial number, the serial numbers on the clones are not valid.
When you say that GM is fixing the cracks you're talking about the gds portion not tech2win, correct? Someone buying a nano today and loading it onto win 10 would have no issues, other than the normal ones, getting it to work as a scan tool. Trying to update controllers is where the issue lies because you have to connect to Delco online? Am I understanding correctly? Haven't fired up my nano in almost a year and wondering what I'll be in for.

firmware/license for the nano will likely have to be updated but tech2win is fine, no changes
that part is easy
programming a module online should also be fine as long as the license for the nano is up to date, whenever you do that gm's java software has be downloaded and that's always being updated but it shouldn't reject the nano as it is just using it as a pass-thru device.

basically the nano is licensed annually, so if you licensed it last in 2023 then it will likely need a update to 2024
GDS2 & the nano may only work for 3 months at a time and then need to be updated again then it's a battle of getting the nano & gds2 to work together (again).

so update... the OBDx GT for 140$ works great.. it even has a scanner app you can use without any of the gm tech 2 win stuff. bit basic for now, but nice graphing. go to their site, down load the drivers, the firmware updater, scanner they call Explorer apps. and then the 2 plug ins. the j2356 or whatever sps needs and the the tech2win of you want that to work. I mainly downloaded the scanner to make sure the drivers worked and it found the dongle. it did, and firmware was up to date.

the gm software is horrendous. after jumping thru the hoops on the acdelco site, I got the 1 year 1 vin access. downloaded tech line sps program, let it all install and update. promptly failed to log into it, cause it's really badly built and not stable at all.

found this guy's youtube video of the specific order you gotta go thru to open the app and it auto log you in. God forbid you just type your name and password into the log in from the desk top short cut lol.

so you have to open the program from within the acdelco website after you've logged in, that's installed on your computer. never seen that before. but eh, after a few times it works. I could never get it to load if you check the load as administrator box for some reason.

but once you get it open, it detects OBDx GT just fine, search for modules, try to update modules that have newer software availability. have Java lock up once or twice and then finally successfully programed my hybrid battery control module #2 in my 2014 volt. I do have a hvac one to do that I saw 3 updates for, but that's for another day haha.

i haven't done the yukon yet, but I figured it will do the 2014 it will do the older stuff.

OBDx guys seem great, very responsive to emails and look into issues. they seem willing to add stuff that's needed it it even if it's more meant as a open source to turn the p59 ecm's with pcm hammer or ls Droid. Just a nice side effect that it works to program modules.

I'm still kinda amazing how bad the gm program runs. it requires windows 10 too. nothing lower. I thought my Ford oem software was bad, it's down right good compared to this haha.

all of the java software modules have to be installed before it will run, which is probably why you had to do it 3 times. It all runs as a virtual machine so a good processor, video card, fast hard drive and lots of ram make a difference.
basically you are running 2 operating systems at the same time and the 2nd one is running staight off of cache memory that it creates.

is having all the modules run just a time thing? like load it up and wait awhile?

I honestly don't know what this laptop has for power. my tuning laptop is a old windows 7 thing, and I am scared to update hptuners since they keep removing function as the epa cracks down on them. so the newer updates the worst that gets haha. I let it hpt update a few years back and lost a few definitions I really needed for a e38 ecm. Googled around like wtf. had to use a restore point to get it back so from then on hpt isn't getting touched and I'm worried updating the os would force me to.

so I just used one laying around at work that isn't locked down and corporate walled in. Lucky it had windows 10 on it.

Will this OBDx GT allow stuff like key fob programing?

it only does whatever the gm software does.. stuff like that would probably be handled by the diagnostic side? so I'm guessing tech2win? which they say it will do but since this isn't a cracked software like the China tech2's, you'd have to pay gm for the subscription.

so in general, I'd say it's probably better for stuff like that to buy a tech 2? or some other scanner?

on a side note, I see this question a lot. is it really hard to program key fobs for these trucks?

I believe key fob programming is available through the DIC on years up to like 2010, but GM removed it on the 2011+

I have a Tech2, and an AutoSync which will allow key fob programming through the DIC on my 2012, but I'm looking for a diagnostics/update tool that will allow me to do things like that for our 2015 Acadia, which is GDS2

I'm new to this having just done one bit of it. but it does list gds2 but I'm pretty pretty sure that's tech2win subscription is like 65$ for 2 or 3 days. not sure if that's as many cars as you can do in that time or not.

I was curious, so I looked it up in my software. this is for a 2015 with a 3.6. not sure which you have but might be all the same. looks to me like you can add a key or program all new keys without a scanner using the 30min method, using the 10min it does say use techline terminal and sps. which is what I used to flash the modules, so this dongle would probably do it. but I'd try the longer free way first.

a subscription to software, like a DIY all-data would be money better spent.

Remote key fobs.

Don't need instructions on how to program new chipped keys, but thanks though.

Basically I have everything to do anything that would ever need to be done with either of my Yukons but they're not compatible with the Acadia and I'm looking for a tool that will give me the same type of diagnostic/programming capability without spending $500+

sounds like you have something I'm not used to seeing. my 08 and 14 gm with keyless entry have a fob with a hidden key. so programming the key, is programing the fob. I just checked and my 14 car can program the fob/key using the drivers door keyhole method.

do you have a separate key with a chip and a fob. both needing pergammed? my software doesn't really explain that well, but if so...maybe it's part of the mobilizer module? either way, I don't know with the way scanners are these days, they show different stuff for different vehicles they are plugged into. so unless you find someone with first hand experience, it would be hard to say what would work.

this would, since it does connect to both of the official gm softwares. but you'll have to pay the subscription price to use it. maybe that cracked nanox would be better?
