So my 4 push button switch, has been acting up for years now, never seems to cause any issues anytime before. Always made sure it went back into 2WD before leaving the driveway. Anyways, today my truck started making terrible noises, almost like a metal clank, when going into first, and would almost feel like it would lock up completely when coming to a stop sign. Now when I put it into reverse it make a LOUD noise but will go into any other gear with no loud noise just a little softer grinding noise almost. Now I’m confused as to what it is? Someone said rearend another said transfer cause and now someone said parking pen.. could someone maybe help me out? I wish I could attach a video for sound effects.

EDIT: just checked trans fluid and it’s burnt.

Trans fluid shouldn't have anything to do with the transfer case. Burnt tranny fluid isn't good; when was the last time it was changed?

Consider adding your year, make, model, and engine to your signature so it's always there for everyone to see.

Yep, burnt transmission fluid is never a good sign, and neither are noises.

I would start by disconnecting the driveshaft and working your way up, to start ruling out stuff. Or before doing that, put the transfer case in neutral and see if the transmission makes the noises when in D or R. That will give you a good idea what to focus on next.

I recommend that you take the truck to a trusted local repair shop, and get the truck on a lift with the wheels off the ground and with someone inside the truck. Put the truck in gear and press the gas pedal a bit, and see if the noise also occurs in the unloaded situation (wheels off the ground). If the noise still occurs, then the Mechanic underneath the truck can go around, with a stethoscope if necessary, and locate the source of the noise.

Thanks! I do know that yesterday when I was being pulled home in N didn’t disconnect the driveshaft so the noise was there if my dad went over a certain speed.
