Surround sound in xm only?

2010 Yukon Denali with nav radio.

OK I've looked online, through the forums but nothing directly relates to this.

Why when in XM radio is the option for "surround" enabled but in any other input it is disabled. It's like my center speaker doesn't work, or it sounds different.

It's grayed out when in FM or aux etc. Any way to enable it besides in XM mode?

Won’t work for am/fm listening. Works for movies played on the dvd and when you plug in iPod and obviously XM
