Hi everyone,
I have a whopper of an issue that no one can seen to pinpoint. A little while back when it started to get cold (I'm in MN) a high pitched whine started coming from the rear speakers. The whine pitch increases with engine RPM. Had it in the dealer, they thought it was the rear amplifier plug because when they reseated it, the noise went away. I went and picked up the Tahoe and was about 4 miles away and the whine started again. Except now it is intermittent. Here's some things that happen:
As engine rpm increases, so does the whine.
Shutting the vehicle off, the whine is replaced by a lower "growling" type noise."
The whine is present even with the radio off.
As mentioned, the whine is intermittent. While driving it earlier today, no whine present. When I went to make a right turn, the whine came back. When the turn signal lever returned to center (off), the whine went away. I then tried the left with the same result.
We were in Texas a few weeks ago. Whine not nearly as bad, which makes me think it is a connector pin that's messed up (expansion/contraction of metal to metal).
Possibly related: the DVD player is now inop...sort of. The unit runs navigation fine, plays CD's fine and plays the intro of the DVD's. When trying to start the DVD with either the remote or the touchscreen up front (truck is in park) DVD will not start, just keeps playing the intro. So for some odd reason the DVD player does not get a signal to actually play the feature portion of the DVD.
I certainly appreciate the help of you folks here. As mentioned, had it at the dealership, was charged $89.95 for a diagnostic. They spent just about a day trying to find it, thought they did, and didn't. I did call them to discuss and now if they have a tech on it until the issue is found they are charging me time (no diagnostic). I realize this could be open ended and labor alone could be easily over $1k.
Thanks in advance, ob_one.

sounds like an alternator whine, could be a bad ground or a diode in the regulator assy. Have them drop the belt off and see if the whine stops.

Hi livingez, the whine is still present with the engine off. I really wish Chevy/GM made their schematics accessible. I think there are enough clues to at least get me pointed in somewhat of a right direction. The turn signal interference is the kicker. I had not noticed that before. Now there is no whine driving with the radio off, but when one of the signals is activated, the whine immediately comes on, then takes a second or two to go away when the signal is stopped.

Hey ob_one, did you ever get this figured out? I have a very similar situation except that on mine, the noise is there constantly and nothing changes it whether engine on or off and it's only in the rear left speakers on mine. If you could share, what fixed yours?

Sorry for the twelve year late reply. I did get it figured out. The remote stereo control panel on the back of the center console accessible by the passengers in the back seat was bad. I replaced the control and that corrected the issue.
