The Tech2 is clunky to use, and will only do GM vehicles from 2000? to 2014 roughly..
I feel I should have put that $400 towards a newer, higher end, universal scanner..

I don't know!

But I suppose a snap-on or autel should do it.
One that can display graphs. One that can do all the body functions the Tech2 can.
Pretty much any decent scanner now is newer, higher end, and more universal than a Tech2!

The minimum you'll need to read the code(s) is one that reads body and chassis codes; look for that in the specs; some of those can be under $200. If you need more functionality you'll need a bidirectional scanner, typically those can run $400 on up.

My son and I share an Autel that was around $800 IIRC, but it's bidirectional and can program new TPMS sensors and has some advanced functions.

@OR VietVet I think you have a Foxwell; does that read body and chassis codes? Maybe others will chime in with specific makes and models.

I have had the Foxwell NT301 the longest and is my go to quick scan scanner.....open all links and see what they offer.

Next I bought the FoxwellNT630....just because and it offered more for the money.

Next was the Foxwell NT710 that is GM manufacturer specific. I can only use it on GM products and only GM products that are supported by this specific scanner. I pretty much pull this one out for my 2 GM vehicles only.

The last one I bought was for the capabilities and the manufacturers that it covers. I have to pay to update this one but when I am trying to figure out something and want to only have one scanner pulled out, this does it for me.

Again, you get what you pay for. Read the info supplied in the links and see what that money buys.

I like my tech2 and the fact that it's made to work with my vehicle, I have other scanners for anything else.
the layout provides all the relevant data to the task being performed.

I'm in the same boat....Doing my research now for a high end scanner...I have a Burb and a Yukon so the Tech2 definitely paid for itself the past three years though..

He didn't mention Foxwell. I don't know if my Foxwell NT710 or my Autel 808S have the capabilities to mess with redoing/reprogram modules but I likely don't have the brain power to be able to do that. I did not dig that deep on my research of them when I bought them. Black Bear did my "traditional tune" on my 2005 Tahoe.

My Autel (MaxiPRO MP808S-TS) came with two years of updates. After that you can purchase updates whenever you need diagnostics for newer vehicles. It can be used for the model years you've already purchased and doesn't self-destruct if you don't update the software. If you're not within an active subscription it does pester you each time you boot it, but you can just click through the dialog box.

When I bought mine (2023) some of the less expensive ones were running Android 4, IIRC. Mine runs Android 11, so if you look at them make sure it's not an old Android version.

EDIT: Don't forget about the Tech 2 Owners Map / List:

I just looked. Yea, my Autel is the MaxiCOM MK808S and about 2 months ago, IIRC, I was using it and had to purchase updates, after the first two years I owned it. @Fless, you must have bought yours about the same time I did. I was not having to purchase updates for what I was currently working on but it asked me about 3 times as I was navigating thru what I actually wanted to do. So, I purchased them and sat there while it went thru the process. I do not know what Android it is running.

I wish that I had seen this video before I bought my Autel MK900BT scanner from Amazon. My scanner is not supported by Autel US Support, and they were not very interested in helping me find what region on this planet (if it exists) where I could obtain support. Live and learn.

My Autel scanner works great for diagnostics, but I haven't needed to program with it yet. I may be hosed, if that programming need occurs in the future.
