Rear CV leaking oil... 2024 Yukon

I was changing out the 75-140W in rear end of my '24 yukon... and noticed the drivers rear CV was leaking oil... i am wondering.. it looks like you can drop off the carrier end of the half shaft and then move the axle to replace it.. without doing an alignment..

not happy with a 8k yukon needing a new half shaft.. it is what it is i guess.

Picture would help. CV should only leak grease—and typically spray it everywhere inside the fender liner and over everything. If it is oily you have something else going on. Probably under warranty.

Yes.. grease.. and just like my old hondas everywhere.. do we need an alignment? The last cv i changed was an ‘18 e350. And you really had to take the knuckle apart.. the get the cv joint in.

You purchased it for $8K or it has only 8K miles on it? Or typo? No longer under warranty?

Yukon is a 2024.. it has 9km miles on it... it is under the 36k warranty and i also have a GM platinum warranty for 7yrs/72k. right now it is 13 months old.

What i want to know... is it looks like the rear half-shaft can be removed and installed with only removing the fasteners on the differential and the other spline end on the wheel.. and moved out. Without altering the alignment... that is what i want to know.

its is a gm job.. i just want to KNOW if it needs an alignment in the back.

this is not a big job... i can probably do it an hour plus.. i might end up doing it if the dealer says he needs my truck for two weeks.. for an hour job. thank you. let me know if you can answer my question on alignment.

LOL what does "9km miles" mean?

If no responses here maybe ask your dealer what's required other than the part change.

oops... 9000 miles... basically between edmond and red river. yukon has been at 80 mph on the highway... but that is it. i was at a mcdonalds the other day and heard some noise on wet pavement... so i changed the rear gear oil into 75-140. gm changed the first free oil on it a couple months ago... i guess they really don't look at much in the inspect that they say they do.

it has been leaking since new. a lot dust/goo on the grease on the wheel end.. i worked in a power plant and am engineer... i just hate it when new things have problems.

certainly somebody has had this happen... i just want to know if they did an alignment. before i call the dealer.

i had fords (2 ecopoops) and i would rather fix it right... than monkey around.. i am not sure the dealers have quality as job 1.

Anytime you mess with control arms and independent suspension, you should get an alignment checked to ensure everything is running true.

This is 100% warranty tho. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you. Let your dealer fix it for free. They should be checking for alignment afterwards too.


BTW, Rear diff fluid is 75W85....throw a bottle of Yukon LSD Additive in it while your at it to keep the LS happier. The GM fluid doesn't seem to have enough and can cause groaning from the clutch plates. Pretty common issue reported on the forums and on various FB groups.

well... to answer that... bob howard gmc wants the truck for four days or so to do it. i have a 92 yr old dad... i really don't want my car sitting around waiting for a tech for days for a two job.... it is what it is... maybe they don't have the shaft.. i don't know.

i looked at it.. i do not think you need to do more than remove bolts and slide it out. looks like lots of clearance.. but i done these before. it is best to know first... the cheapest GM half shaft is $250..

I agree. Let the dealer take care of it. There are better things to spend time on.

Let the dealer know the dilemma and see if they have a loaner or a rental. Or, rent your own.

So, the pic you show is at the back of hub. I assume you are saying the outer boot is leaking and slinging grease, correct? The is not a "slide it out" job. You have to disassemble for access and deal with electric park brake and remove the large nut at the outer end of shaft. It is not gonna fail asap. Arrange with the dealer and at least let them see it and then decide on a plan of action and time. Also, if you do attempt to do work there, that area is no longer under warranty, ANY OF IT.

i do have GM platinum warranty. i wonder if that rents a car or not?
will call another dealer in town see if they are back logged... i suppose a chevy dealer could do it too.
