It didn't damage anything. Valve cover gasket had a cut in it, dripped oil onto the exhaust manifold and caught fire. We noticed it smoking really bad from under the hood, so I stopped, opened the hood, and glanced over at a small fire on the exhaust manifold. By the time I grabbed something to put it out, it had already extinguished itself, not even leaving any evidence that it was even there.

Ah, c'mon now....after the nerves calmed down and all, you didn't make fun of the fact that we had run around the truck like a couple of clown fireman jumping out of a Volkswagon Beetle! My heart skipped a beat on that one...no major fire thank god.

Haha, yea, BOSS and I ran around the truck a couple times just like some damn clowns. He had a towel in his hand and was standing on one side of the truck, so I ran around to grab the towel to pat out the fire, but I guess he ran around the truck at the same time and we ended up just circling the damn truck looking for each other.

When I started this thread, I was expecting it to be only a couple pages long with a few pics of the swap and maybe a video or two at the end. This was suppossed to be a very simple, one weekend swap that's turning into a two month long project so far. I can't wait to get the bugs figured out and roast some 24s:rocking:

Found a nice big vacuum leak at the egr valve tube going into the s/c. I went ahead and just removed the entire egr crap. I'll just have to deal with the CEL until Justin gets a chance to tune out the egr for me sometime later. Hopefully this will take care of my p0300 misfire code. I still don't think this is what's causing bank two to run lean. I haven't driven it around yet to even see if it took care of my random misfire dtc. I'll find out tomorrow.

Oh yea, btw. I further disassembled the old 5.3 and found 3 melted pistons (pistons 2, 4, and 7), a crack in the number 7 cylinder wall, and a blown head gasket. Found some of the missing pistons melted to the heads. Apparently, my lean issue started with the 5.3 from what it looks like.

Further evidence to run AFR gauge on both sides of the exhaust? ....wow, that's nuts.

Feel your pain brother still working bugs out of mine! I have thought about taking off the egr as well but my question is can it pass the emissions test after Justin reprograms it?

BUMP for Justin/Jenna

Well if it's like the O2 sensors, when they hook up their computer to the PCM it shows the O2 sensors are still there and functioning. Justin also tuned out my FlexFuel sensor.

Jeff was looking at my truck and I don't have the EGR because mine is the Flex-Fuel type. Here is what I found:

8th digit in VIN:
8 - FlexFuel
T - have EGR

You might get lucky and pass w/o it. If I'm not mistaken (Justin and Jenna should know), simply removing the egr from the pcm only turns "off" the egr so it doesn't throw codes and illuminate the MIL, so you'll still have slightly higher emissions levels which may cause you to fail the sniffer during inspection. But, it's also going to depend on your current engine combo also. BTW, what else are you still trying to work out on yours? I thought you had it all up and running.

Quite possible that it went lean and caused that, but excessive time at WOT will also cause heat buildup and could lead to that problem. I do suspect fuel delivery though.

Here is an interesting read on the topic: http://www.kb-silvolite.com/article.php?action=read&A_id=34

ME too I thought most of the issue was the cats needing to be replaced and the plugs being to open. When I went to regap the plugs I noticed cylinder 3 was nice a clean like new the rest had some discoloration. I am not getting fuel into number 3 have spark so I need to pull off the intake and look at the injector. We are having enough isues together we ned to form a self help group AA for the owners of troubled rides!

Yup, #4 was the plug that was different than the rest on JK's truck. Not sure why as of yet.

A lot like JK I think the issue was there before I installed the new motor just didnt know it guess you just get used to it as they age not running the same. Both will be up sooner than later and it will be worth it my ran strong even one cylinder down so I am anxious to say the least.
