I changed the oil on Sat. After filling my 2017 Yukon Xl 4x4 with 7 quarts I put the oil cap back on, drove to a level area ( 50 feet ) let the engine run to distribute the oil properly for my final recheck on the dips stick.

I took the oil cap off placed it on a rag above the fan on the fan shroud. I checked the oil it was low, so I went to get one more quart in the garage. When I got back to the vehicle the rag was next to the vehicle - assuming wind caused it to fly off, not thinking about the oil cap at that time I just picked up the rag.

I put in the oil in and went to put the cap on - NO CAP.

The cap was not under the vehicle, near the vehicle, then it must have fallen into the engine compartment. Nope, no obvious signs of the cap ( we all know the cap is not a little thing ) the cap can't fall into tight areas as it's too big.

OK the cap must be in the plastic "skid plate" under the engine. Took the "skid plate" down, no cap.

I searched Sat, Sun, and today NO CAP. The cap vanished in thin air.

It didn't roll anywhere as I searched a 100-foot area around the vehicle during the day and at night with flashlights. I had my wife look in the engine compartment with a fresh set of eyes, no luck.

I spent $150.00 on an inspection camera that they use to look behind walls with 3ft extension to look behind the engine between the firewall - NO CAP.

I started the engine expecting it to rattle loose - NO CAP.

OK, so maybe I carried the cap back to the garage, house etc. Nope searched everywhere I was - NO CAP

I just ordered a new cap, but for the life of me this is one for the book people, the cap vanished in this air.

I doubt anyone can give me advice or that it happened to them, but just in case if it did where did your cap end up if it did fall into the engine compartment. My concern is that by not finding it, it comes loose someday and goes through my fan, belts, radiator etc. as I'm doing 75mph down the road.

Amazon Prime and it'll be there Monday. So that's your oil cap that my coonhound brought home to her den! She has a liking for tools, found my pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers in there along with the kids' dolls, empty toilet rolls, legos, cactus and whatever else can fit in her mouth that doesn't weigh twice her weight!

A crow or raven or rodent like a squirrel probably grabbed it. Or your just getting old and missed it!

Have you checked your pants pockets? ;)

I'm sure you'll find it the moment the new cap arrives! :banghead:

Pretty sure any autozone/ advance auto/ every auto store on earth is open sunday. It’s a piece of plastic with a few threads what’s the points in ordering an OEM. I don’t understand this logic at all.

Because some just want OEM, the same way some people keep all of the boxes and such for computers, tv's, etc.

Why do some people put 24's on, there's already 4 good rims on there...

And, maybe, it's new enough or different enough that the aftermarket hasn't developed one for it yet. Let it go, it's the OP's choice.

Oh well, it's gone and you ordered a new one. End of story, I would not worry about it any further. I've dropped things before and round or circular objects sometimes like to roll. I've dropped sockets, oil or coolant caps, lugnuts, etc and had some end up rolling over 50-75 feet away.
Just put the new cap on and be done with it.

Many folks say that about gas caps and then wonder why their check engine comes on... I'd do the same as the OP, only OEM parts for me.

I had a car that had an emblem on the engine cover. One day after taking it to the dealer for service (first 3 years service was included), I noticed the emblem was gone. So they bought a new one. 9 years later, I was doing some work and that emblem was wedged in a tight spot that wasn't visible. Amazing how long it stayed in there without being seen (110k miles). I sold there car 3 years ago but still have the emblem. Anyway, I know how frustrating the mystery is but you might figure it out later, MUCH later.

I bet it's in the engine compartment- it's amazing how things can find the perfect place to fall into and roll out of sight. And it's black so it would just blend in. Probably find it if you pull the engine but I wouldn't worry about it falling out and hurting anything.
