i have a 2006 tahoe, 5.3 flex fuel, 85K miles. usually i have a shop do the oil change with regular oil but this time i did it myself and used mobil1 extended performance 5w-30 and the mobil1 filter. the manual said 6 quarts, so i put in 6 quarts.

My oil dipstick has the 5 holes. Usually my oil runs at the 4th hole. Now with 6 quarts, it looks to be 1 hole above the 5th hole (a little above the hatch marks) with the engine warm.

I never really noticed the oil pressure guage unless i am cruising at 70 for a long trip and start going up a steep hill. now i notice the needle moving more often when i accelerate. the oil pressure is 38-40 at idle and gets to around 50 at 70mph, but i havent seen it go above 60.

Is higher oil pressure a good thing? Is the oil over-filled to a dangerous level that i need to drain some out ASAP? Is the overfilled oil causing the pressure variations or is it the change to synthetic oil?

I`m guessing that the higher reading on the dipstick is from the shop you had change the oil was only putting 5 quarts in. When you put 6 quarts in It was higher up.

Do you have any past Receipts from the shop? Maybe they list how many quarts you were charged for on it?

The oil pressure reading seems normal to me, The pressure always fluctuates with RPM.

the last bill says i was charged for 6 quarts - i don't know if the full 6 was put in it.

what amount of oil do the holes in the dipstick represent?

I`ve heard that each hole represents 1/4 of a quart.

where is the oil on the dipstick after the truck has been shut down for a while?
