Well if that's what we're comparing then yes. My F250 with a H&S programer, full deletes, and exhaust will walk the dog on our Yukon. And any other red light renegade that pulls up. But to say it's underpowered is a bit much I think. Personally I guess I don't notice it. Granted it's no Vette, but I feel it does ok.

I don't believe I was drawing comparisons to my truck. My truck makes almost three times the torque.
Like I said above, I have a 6.2 coming, and I am happy say good bye to the 5.3L.
You may have not noticed it before, but im thinking now you will..

5.3 are like having a V6 when loaded and would be even worse when towing.

On the other hand you really want to tow.... you need a diesel truck imo

By tow I mean tow. Not jet ski type crap

Diesel owners know that it's not about peak horsepower or peak torque. It's about where those numbers peak vs. RPM.
Diesel engines make massive torque in the mid teens to the high 2000s. Right where we need it.
Now I'm not comparing the 5.3l to a diesel, but this low RPM power band is also being achieved in gasoline engines. Not as great as diesel, but its starting to get much better.

I cant seem to find the graphs, but I do remember what they looked like.
Peak 5.3L numbers are reached at the upper 4000s of the RPM scale, and that's an area that's out of bounds and unuseable for 99% or us. Nobody runs at 4500rpm plus..... It does not have a spike in torque around the spot where we all drive the most. I see it in the hills on a freeway. There simply isn't anything there to haul overdrive at speed when confronted by a hill or headwind.

The 6.2 and the Ford Ecoboost hits sweet spot of torque right where we need it, around 2000 rpm, and hold max torque right on up.
If GM Wants to to tout 5.3l power, they need to make more of it where we all use it, and not having to run wide open to get to it.

I guess I might be beating a dead horse, but why buy an extremely heavy SUV with a smaller engine when a larger one is more capable?

Maybe the reason is that those of us with a 6.2L on order..simply aren't driving it.:chair:

Did anyone receive their TPW schedule for their vehicle orders yet? Mine so far is 10/6/2014. Crossing my fingers that nothing makes it deviate from there.

Only quality control can hold the car longer. Good luck

For me, it was basically the fact that it cost about 8-10 grand more to get that bigger motor. Of course there are a few more gizmo's along with the motor, but it just didn't make sense to me.

That, and the fact that we rarely tow anything with it, so the bigger motor just isn't needed. Honestly, so far I think the 5.3 is a fabulous motor that drives very well in our Yukon. But with less than 1000 miles logged so far, with no long trips, no mountains, and no towing I don't have much experience with it. But normal day to day driving, I am just peachy with the little guy.

When tuned the 5.3 is really a very capable motor even in these big SUVs

When do we think the 5.3L trucks will get the new 8 speed?

If the 5.3 got the 8 speed and HIDs, I'd gladly rock a SLT Yukon XL and save almost $10K over a Denali.

Is there any EPA numbers for the new 8 speed? Is the 6.2L 4X4 still rated 20MPG highway??

8-speeds will be in ALL variations of the full size SUVs, including 5.3L, by summer according to the GM Powertrain articles. GM's Toledo plant just has to ramp up production supply to meet demand. For now, since 6.2L have lower production numbers and are the costlier variants in the model lineups, they get it first. Once there are enough 8-speeds to go around, the 6-speed will be discontinued permanently.

Humer,
The 8 speed is all about fuel mileage. It allows GM to run an overall higher gear with the shifts much closer in order to make them less dramatic.
I'm sure that GM and others are going to add even more gears in the future, sooner rather than later.

I respectfully disagree. You can tune it all you want with whatever electronic gizmo you want, but you won't gain any torque to speak of.

Horsepower is a useless figure because it's usually made at top of the RPM scale. Torque is made down low, and in a gasoline engine, it's about displacement.

If you look at the Cummins ISX semi truck engines, most make less than 450 horse, but twist out 1850 -2050 lbs of torque at around 1,300 RPM.
Yes, diesel makes power differently from gas engines, but the focus is on power to move weight at low RPM.

For gasoline to grunt out low end power, it takes big Pistons.

Those companies they are there to make money, the goal is when you walk out of the dealership you have the must expensive car from the lot or if you order one the want the same. Do you know the new escalade have 2 suspension setting, which the Denali don't have.
If I want that option I have to go escalade, and is 8-10 k more.
They don't make money in low profile cars the make money in high ends cars.
