Occasional loud clanging sound on startup

I have 2007 yukon xl 5.3 flex fuel 180k and have a loud changing sound from passenger side of motor or around engine covetr not consistent only till it warms up

My money is on the starter. It's not retracting after start and banging on the flywheel. If you don't want to or can't get under the truck after starting, look through the passenger wheel well and you can see the starter near the frame rail. You'll hear it if that's the issue.

Thank you for the responses pretty sure it was the starter when changed the old one had a rattle now fighting another problem

did you just do the starter?

and your other thread was started in the wrong year sub forum too. unless you have a 2021 and newer truck.

Yes starter was bad now for some reason I have a misfire and stablitrack light it is running bad think I might have broken a ground for the coil packs

well stablitrack turns off when you have a miss fire. that's normal. what the miss fire is from, I don't know?


these trucks pretty commonly do weird electoral things and it ends up being the battery cables. they look good inside, but are going bad from the inside from corrosion you can't see. maybe, and it's a big maybe when you took the battery cable off the starter and moved it around, it's going bad and now causing an issue.

maybe some else can chime in and say for sure if there's any ground wires down by the starter that could have been knocked loose?
