Need some info

So my buddies car just got broken into 2 nights ago and they stole/vandalized the whole car. He only lives about a block from my house so I am worried and decided I want to do a viper alarm. So this brings up some questions.

1. Is the factory remote start better then the viper or does it not matter?
2. What do you guys thnk of putting in a viper?

My advice would be to use the extra money for your onstar subscription and keep the factory alarm and remote start, because the factory installed remote start is totally integrated with all of the systems in the truck it detects what temp it is outside and will turn on the heat and front heated seats when below 50* and turn on the AC when above 75* (not sure if the viper does that but i highly doubt it, and for me living in new england that is the only reason why i use my remote start) I beleive GM makes a dealer installed alarm/remote start upgrade which uses an LCD long range remote and its about $180 if you order it on your own

You can integrate the Viper, as well as most other high end aftermarket systems, with just about anything in the vehicle. I connected mine to control my heated seats, rear window and outside mirror defrost, headlights, and power windows. With a good, multi-channel system, the only limitation to what you can control is the installer.
Another benefit of using an aftermarket system is that you can add add'l sensors for better security coverage, i.e, tilt sensors, glass break sensors, motion, etc.
Also, an aftermarket two-way system will alert you if one of the zones in your vehicle has been triggered, and you also get confirmation of commands (lock, unlock, rs, etc).
Viper also has GPS tracking systems available that you can add-on so that you can track your vehicle if you let someone borrow it, or track it in the event it gets stolen.
IMO, go with a well-known respectable aftermarket unit, like a DEI product such as the Viper. OEM systems don't allow the protection and expandable security and convienence options like most aftermarket units provide.

Off the top of my head, depending on where you get the parts, roughly between $600-900 with the rs alarm unit, all the modules, and labor.
