a 12" rim is really wide for a 305. It should be more like 9". What backspace? if youre more than about 5.5" your rim will contact suspension. For a 9" wide rim keys are fine.
i have 20x12's and 305 55 20's on my tahoe. i have a 6" rcd cranked to 7" and had to trim. good luck trying to run that setup with just a leveling kit. although the trail graps i have run a little bigger than some other 305 55 20 or 33 1250 20's out there.
my build thread link is in my signature if you want to see more pictures.

the x12 wide wheels are made in a -44mm offset. they are not going to touch the suspension. without proper lift though your tires will be rubbing the fender and bumpers due to the wide stance.
yes if OP went with a narrower x9 wide wheel with a 0 offset or even slightly negative they would probably be okay with a 3" leveling kit. 20x10's -24mm offset and 305's would rub pretty bad. 295 55 20's can work with trimming.
you will need a 6" lift to run 20x12's and 305 55's. unless you don't want to have a bumper or fenders anymore.
