Question, someone local has a engine/trans up for 800 obo out of 01 silverado. Says it has about 99k on it. Engine is making some noise but runs ok. Says transmission works fine. If I go completely through this motor (cams, valves etc) what would you guess I'd have to put out in parts $wise?? I'm considering this over a supercharger on my 5.3

He had an LQ4 in is 01 Silverado? That doesnt sound right to me...the SS came with an LQ9...Im not sure what the 2500s and above came with back then though...whats the deal?

It depends on whats producing the noise...piston slap needs to be bored/honed with new pistons in order to fix..I do believe

All the nbs 2500hd/1500hd came with LQ4 6.0s. The new bodies have the L76 iirc. Heads/cam/longtubes/tune can make more power than a 5.3 with only boost.

A supercharged 5.3 will outperform the lq4.. Put a TVS on it and make 530rwhp/tq easy, some charged 5.3s are making 600rwhp... Do the same thing with a lq4 then you have a entire different story... 650hp is not impractical for a charged 6.0.... :)

Uh 650whp on a stock 6.0l? I would love to see a dyno for that.

Def. a LQ4, Picked up my LQ4/4L80E out of a 02 Silvy 2500.
Quick way to check, get something like a screw driver, Bamboo skewer, whatever, pull the spark plugs and find where the piston top is the closest, and run it softly on the top of the piston to feel if it is dished or flat. Concave pistons would be an LQ9, Flat pistons LQ4.

I think you have them mixed up the LQ9 has higher compression (10:1) so the pistons are flat, LQ4 pistons are dished and net 9.4:1 iirc.

or what about just checking a casting number? or are they the same? i know the lq9 is the way to go. the heads flow over 330 out of the box. the lq4 heads are garbage. good news though. the l19 heads can be bought from GM for $600. good luck finding them used. atleast around hear people snag them up before you know it.

So the heads on the lq4 and lq9 are different? I thought the main difference between the two was the comp ratio. What else is different between the two motors?
