I'm trying to figure out if my liftgate sits too low. 2017 yukon XL. I am 5'9" and hit my head on the sides and just barely clear the center. This seems super low. It seems to operate normally; quiet, smooth etc. When its open fully, I cannot push it up any higher.

Can anyone get me a measurement from the ground to the locking mechanism or to some reference point on the door?

Depends on if you’re lowered or stock height. Also you could disconnect the shocks and see if it goes higher but be careful and don’t drop it on your head or you’ll be mad at me. :( It’s possible someone replaced them with some that are too short and aren’t allowing full opening because they’’re at the end of their length.

Read post #5 @k_arnold72 there is switch on roof console that give you different opening settings.
Did you see that you can adjust the height it opens on your vehicle? Post #5 mentions it, and in post #6 I left you a link to see how to do it. It labeled itself as “ site maintenance” but if you click on it, you’ll see how to adjust the height. Sounds like it’s set to only open 3/4 of the way.

I understand that and my knob is on the fully open setting. I did mention that i cannot push it up any higher from where it sits, which as i understand it, means the liftgate is as high as it can go.

It really means that your lift gate is opening as wide as the struts will allow. Take off one end of both struts (VERY easy to do) and see if the lift gate will travel any higher.
