I've decided to keep this 08 ltz but after the motor work is done I really need to address the rust. This is a MA vehicle for some time, I'm sure, because I can't find much underneath that doesn't have rust on it. It's only starting to show up on the rear fender wells at the edges, but underneath is well developed. I don't think it hopeless or I wouldn't bother, but i definitely need to get in front of it and stop it or slow it down as much as possible as soon as possible.

What do you guys up north do to preserve as much as you can?

Are there specific components I should be looking to replace immediately knowing there is rust of this degree?

I battled rust on my 07 fenders and lower doors. I spent a good amount of time getting down to bare metal outside and inside the wheelwell and thinking I removed all the rust prior to painting. The darn stuff came back eventually. Easiest just to replace or patch like @Jimmyy suggested.

On my newly built Jeep I’m going to apply this Amsoil metal protection on my undercarriage to see how it fares the MN winters…

This is a debate as old and emotional as which wax to use. Another option for you is to use a rust converter and top with rustoleum. Lots of Jeep guys swear by it.


Yet another option is Waxoyl, which is what I used when I lived in PA in college.
I found some of the rust converters and it looks like a decent start to at least begin the battle. I just need to find someone with a sprayer.

We buy trucks from down south. :D Lot of guys use POR 15 to "stop" the rust. On body panels replace or patch in good metal.
I knew I was making a mistake buying a truck with a title from Mass, but here we are. I do have some good donors in the salvage yard though if they'll let me chop em up for panels and I can get doors, fenders and lift gates if need be.

Check out my build thread for some pictures of ours. I sanded/wire wheeled, cleaned and then did 2 coats of Rustoleum converter.

That's exactly what I wanted to do. I have two friends with paint shops and wanted to lift the whole thing up and clean off all I could and the use the converter on it before I seal it. Then do the body work. I'm more interested in stopping it right now.

I just used the Rustoleum in the spray cans. Harbor Freight has them for under $6/can and they went pretty far.

Mine is a 07 from Raliegh NC. My rockers are rusting worse than any other vehicle I owned when I lived in MA.
Thankfully that's the only thing right now but, I need to get on it before it gets outta hand.

What are your plans? Remove and replace panels?
I'll be cutting out the rockers soon.
