Today i was driving the tahoe back from getting something to eat and i noticed a knocking sound coming from somwhere around the rear it sounded like could be wrong. Friday on my way to work i went over railroad tracks and after that it sounded like something was grinding metal on metal. I thought i was going to have to turn around a go get my dads truck to drive but i said the hell with it if it breaks AAA will come get me. It stopped doing that after about 1/2 mile. I have had the u-joints replaces in the last year on the rear but the fronts have been a few years. Could it be u-joints or something more serious

When my u-joints went out last month, it vibrated and shook like hell at any speed. This actually resulted in a cracked slip yoke as well. Did you get under and check to see if the drive shaft has play in it? It could be that your gear oil has lost its viscosity and you are hearing your gears and locker if you have one clashing together. It may be your pinnion bearing went bad or your rear end is dying all together.

I have gotten under it and checked to see if there was any play in the drive shaft and there was none. I am hoping that it is not the rear end going bad but if so maybe it is time for a 14b

14 bolt SF would be sweet. There was one in my area for $150 a couple months ago that I passed on to another member on this forum. I don't know if he got it or not. I couldn't put up the cash at the time, but if I had the money, it would be under my truck right now. If it was still for sale, I would buy it without thinking twice. Haven't seen one for that good of a price since then. They are kind of hard to come across for a 4wd model.

I would start by popping off your rear diff cover and taking a look. If it looks good, put some new oil in it and see if that does the trick.

If the clicking/banging/hammering/bad sound is coming from the rear, it won't be a CV, or t-case, as I'm pretty sure you've got a straight axle. +1 for popping the diff cover, and looking for chunks. You can also chock the front, in 2WD, put the back on jack stands, put it in drive, and let the wheels turn at idle while climbing underneath it. Don't drink while you're doing this though. Lots of room for darwin, so don't be stupid. But then you can put your hands on the t-case, rear diff, etc., and feel where the clanking is coming from. Then start drinking. :drunk:

I agree 100%. Jack it up and see if you can hear where the grinding is coming from. I would still take off the rear diff cover and look at it if you haven't in a while. Can't hurt, right?

While you're at it, stop off at a Starbucks beforehand. Can't hurt?

Be my guest. I don't go to Starbucks. I can't see paying $4 or whatever for a cup of coffee or whatever the hell they sell. I think I have been there once like 3 years ago. If I drink coffee which I hardly do, I will brew my own. But if you like going to a ***** place like that, that's your business.

figured out what was wrong the rear end was shot. I am getting it rebuilt because i cant find a 14b in the area. They said that there was nothing left that they could use except the axle shafts and housing

I wouldn't be surprised ONE BIT if you had stopped at Starbucks.

What's the price difference between a rebuilt axle and a 14 bolt in your area? Can't be huge, is it?
