This took me by surprise, was getting fuel today and I felt the distinct 4HI bind in a turn but mine is AWD.

Front and rear diffs have about 30K miles on Amsoil 75-90 Severe Duty fluid, transfer case also has 30K on the Valvoline Maxlife ATF.

It felt and sounded like the rear tire was skipping a bit but cleared up after a few turns and driving straight...hard to tell if it was from the front or rear.

I have the G80 rear and have had no issues. The transfer case chain does have a good bit of slack and it's going to be replaced with a freshly rebuilt one soon.

This was after about 10 miles of driving normal, no hard starts or turns, no spinning tires or trying to anyway.

Does this sound like the transfer case?

If it felt like the rear wheel, then g80 most likely if it only happened once probably no big deal

It took a few turns in the parking lot to get whatever was binding to release. I replaced the ring and pinion, carrier and pinion bearings, axle tube bearings around 30K ago, the carrier guts looked great..spiders looked perfect.

Could the transfer case "lock" and cause this? I'm going to change the fluid this weekend so I'll get a look inside the rear.

I think I found the culprit. the fluid has just over 47K miles on it. :buttkick: Came out a little thin with some light silver hue, I think I caught it early enough but the fluid looks beaten down. I thought I changed it at 140K and it was back around 125K, with so much going on I just lost track of time. Gears look good but yikes, need to be more careful.

I rebuilt this rear back in Aug of 2023, used thicker break in oil, then changed that to either Valvoline or Amsoil 75-90 and ran that for about 2-3K, then filled with Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 and that has about 47K on it.
