I replaced my Brakes and rotors along with parking brake and bleeding the system a few weeks ago. Drove and towed a trailer hours away with zero issues. A couple weeks later I drove 3.5 hours and on the last few miles noticed a sound that was intermittent from the rear. Sound does not change with acceleration. Changed rear differential oil last night and plan on removing wheels for inspection today. Any ideas or tips to look for?

What kind of a sound are you hearing?

First: Welcome to the forum from Oregon and post pics of the rig please.

Second: Like asked before, what kind of sound and it would also help if you told what rig you have and is it RWD or 4WD?

We recommend that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. While you may have posted pertinent info in your first post, you may forget to do it again and the info is needed by us anyway. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.

If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

May be funny but it almost sounded like a coffee maker brewing with the windows up and was thinking maybe a blend door, then with windows down sounded more like a gravely grinding noise but just every once in a while and at the end of a long drive. It’s 4wd and GT4/G80 RPO for rear end. Just finishing service on rear diff and only normal amount of shaving dust on magnet for 148K miles, gears looked new to me an nothing floating in oil or metal chunks

With recently doing brakes, my first thought is rear backing plates. They get rusty and bend easy. Sometimes the part of the backing plate that protrudes between the disc and parking brake drum expands from rust, and then the new rotor has a bit larger drum thickness, or the rotor has a bit smaller inside diameter, so with the new rotors you start hearing it

Yea, get the rear wheels off and a good inspection. May need to remove the caliper to see what it may be. Plus, did you clean thoroughly on the caliper slide points, the pad contact points at the caliper and use a high temp brake grease to lube all those areas?

"Sound does not change with acceleration."

That eliminates any rotating parts.

Check heat shields around exhaust and exhaust mounts.

Just removed the rear rotors and it looks like I have the parking brake hardware retaining clip on reverse on the drivers rear side. Just goes to show, don’t get ahead of yourself. Double check everything! Thanks for all the advice together and see how it goes.
