To those of you who change your own oil, like myself.

Do you have a grease gun and do a lube every every time as well? My U-truck for joints are likely going out and when I realized that I have had my truck for about 40k miles and I have never greased any joints. Usually when you get an oil change from a reputable place, they give a full lube too!

Soooo.... how many people are doing the lube themselves and how many parts on the truck need a lube?

I always change my own oil, but for lubing the truck I end up doing it about once a year!! There are a few locations on the driveline and front suspension but can't remember them all right now! I'll take a look under mine and check out the book and let you know just how many!

I just buy the oil I want to use and take it to the dealer. $10 + change later I get the lubes and fluids topped off. It's a no brainer for me. I do have the skills and tools to do it myself though.

I use Royal Purple and K&N oil filter, I change my own, I wouldn't trust anyone else, why make it easy for someone to get my oil in return for something cheap like Pensoil or something. Besides it gives you an opportunity to check everything at the under carriage.
I've actually gotten a K&N oil filter and when I got home to change the oil I found out someone swapped it out for a purolator $10 difference. Trust no one with your vehicle

Since I've had my truck I was the only one changing the oil, I did lube the front end about two months ago (I think it was 11 all together) but I recently bought my own grease gun so with the next oil change I planned on checking and lubing anything that has a fitting on it.

I don't trust anyone touching my truck just like yukonjacks said.

you say there are about 11 locations that get greased?

It never occured to me that by doing my own oil change I was missing out on the lube part. I might just take it in for a lube but I want to see how easy it would be for me to do it myself first. I have never priced out a grease gun or grease, how much does that usually run?

I change all fluids on my truck, and do a grease job everytime i change a fluid. its worth it to me. Shes getting old and i would rather keep er in shape than have her break down. Plus, I trust no one with my truck.

Yes i know this is not an obs thread

Make sure you get a flexible hose for the grease gun, makes everything super easy. The gun, hose and grease is cheaper than a pizza and a couple beers

I have an air powered gun with a flexible hose. If I had it to do over I'd get a hand one with a one handed trigger and the flex hose.
Guns arn't much $20-25 for a good one.
Grease , varys $2 - $6
You may need a special tip to do the 'u' joints.

i`ve never taken any vehicle i`ve ever owned to have the oil changed. it`s way too easy to do and cheaper.

i had a friend that worked at a oil change place and they hire anyone even if they have no mechanical background at all.

these guys screwed up ALOT! never tightening drain plugs, stripping spark plug threads then getting a breaker bar and forcing it in the head., forgetting to fill diffs after a 4x4 service etc etc.

the ease of paying to have it done is not worth the aggrevation of suing a place to replace your engine because some idiot forgot to tighten your drainplug.

Usually factory u-joint are not greaseable. Aftermarket ones are usually greaseable. You have to put the joint in the right way and get it turned just right to grease it though.

Don't buy a cheap gun. They leak past the plunger and half the tube gets wasted. Makes a mess when you change tubes also.

Quick lube places are good for overgreasing to the point it causes more problems.

I use to change my own oil but its just a PIA to get rid of the used oil..... Now days I take it down to 10 min oil change and let them do it. But I do know the manager and he the one working on my rides when I go there...

Bought my grease gun from a guy at a yard sale. Old mecahnic retired. So it was like a $100 battery operated one. For $20. I use sticks of Mobil1 Synthetic Grease on everything. Just get a nice flex hose and all you have to do is pop it on the grease fitting. Pump some grease until you see grease pushing out of the part you are lubing. Then move to the next fitting, The u Joints i have have a regular grease fitting on them. I bought them just so i could grease them.

I used to bring my truck to a Jiffy Lube for this kind of stuff until one morning i came outside to see oil all over my drive way, and to find that i was able to unscrew my oil filter by hand. I was PISSED.

Now the fuel pump i just had put in my truck days ago is making a loud whirring sound already. Time to bring that back to. NEVER trust shops.

I take mine to the dealer. They do they oil change, lube, fluids, and tire rotation for $35. I think it's worth it, because getting rid of used oil is a pain around here. Plus I trust the guys at the dealership, and get to watch them work on the truck if I want to.
