Got the wrong struts?

I think you do have the wrong shock/strut. The travel and extended/collapsed lengths seem wrong. But it looks like @915_Tahoe has entered the chat so I'll leave it to the experts!

That’s strange. I wonder why it’s says they do fit when I look them up
I was thinking the same, but decided one of us must be wrong then.
I think you have sufficient cause to get your money back should you return them to O'Reilly...YOU guys sold me the wrong part

So here is a plot twist! I pulled measurements on the struts that came out of the truck. Went to oriellys and pulled measurements on a new 43gm1000ps strut. Exactly the same measurements. So I went to the local Chevy house. Pulled measurements on the 84977478 strut. It was 1/4” longer.
Old strut and the one that is in the car now, exactly the same measurements. Oriellys guy suggested that new one needs to be “relearned”. Thinks it’s an electrical issue.

There is always Rock Auto. Find a 5% discount code in the thread on this forum entitled "Rock Auto discount codes"
They have them, 433 each, without the coilovers.
Which should be able to be reused.
Which should be able to be swapped by your mechanic.

There's also this. The price is for two.
Must have fallen off a truck or something...

Holy crap, they might be right.

I did watch a video on relearning the magnaride height. Sounds like a dealer operation. I would try calling the dealers around you to see who knows exactly what you're talking about, and take it there. Or do some more research on it first.

Compounding this issue is:
The O'Reily cross reference for the GM part number does not reference to the 43gm1000 for some reason. I think it should.

I have a new to me 2016 Tahoe LTZ bought it in Florida no rust, it needs new magnetic ride shocks replaced. I plan on doing the job myself just have the springs swapped at a shop.
I have been doing quite a bit of research on the subject
The part number in question on Gm parts direct Gm# 84977478 LH/RH costs $522
On Rock auto the same part is $432
The original Gm shocks need you to remove original spring and reinstall on new shock,
They don’t sell Gm shocks with a new spring installed. Other manufacturers do though but from what I gather they don’t last very long

This is a good point, @weldernotmechanic, im betting the coils are a little thinner on your MSR unit.

I recently replaced all 4 mag shocks on my 2015 LTZ. Yes for OEM it’s the shocks only you need to disassemble the front struts and put in the new shocks. I did this myself it’s not hard. This spring compressor set worked well for me FYI if you want to do it yourself. This set was very sturdy and I felt very confident with them on the springs.


Also, to get the top strut nut off an impact is required. Also tighten the top nut to 55 ft-lb. These sockets work well for that so you can use a torque wrench.



Also when the job is all done recommended to get a scanner and do the level procedure.

Any bi-directional autel scanner would do it. This is the one I have:


There are probably cheaper ones that would work. Look for bi-directional scanner that can comm with the suspension controller.


I also bet a dealer would charge an hour for this so probably $150 for them to do the level procedure.

I have a 2019 Yukon Denali and the front struts have failed. I understand the OEM struts do not last. Is there a brand I should look for to upgrade?

IMO, you cannot really 'upgrade' from the GM suspension, as it is very well designed. If your rig is predominantly for serious off-road uses, then aftermarket suspensions may provide better results.

No strut lasts forever, as it is a wear item. In general, GM suspension last for up to 100,000 miles, but of course there are exceptions. The active GM suspension shocks/struts, like the ones that you have on your rig, are warranted for life, so if they have failed go get your replacements.
