going to change trans fluid and filter -- two questions

2005 Escalade ESV AWD with 6.0. Has tow package. All stock. First question, on my 1999 Tahoe I have to unbolt the rear mount of the trans and lift the whole package up slightly to clear the exhaust with the pan. Escalade looks similar but not exactly the same. Will I have to do that here as well?

2nd question: what transmission is this beast likely to have. 4L65E? I'm guessing it is not a 4L60E only because it behaves quite differently than my Tahoe's. And how can I identify definitively? I know to count the bolts. Anything else?

Trying to minimize downtime -- it does happen to be my work truck lol.

do the at radiator flush technique.
drop pan after first drain.
swap filter, finish flush.

No mess.

You have a 4l65e. It is VERY similar to a 4l60e.

You might consider a few things while your doing this. An external filter can be much more efficient to change, I am installing sonnax line pressure booster, Sonnax 4L60-E 4L65-E 4L70-E Pinless Forward Accumulator Piston Kit/ Sonnax 1-2 4L60 4L60E 4L65-E & 4L70-E Pinless Accumulator Piston Kit, and I already put in a larger trans cooler and Corvette servo.

Cheap insurance on an aging trans IMHO.

Might also consider swapping to a pan with a drain plug. Makes the job a little cleaner next time around.

No need. Just use the flush method and let it dump the pan into a bucket.
Then you drop a empty pan.
No need for a drain that still leaves a quart in the pan.

Thanks guys. Ordered the AC Delco filter kit for the trans. Should be here 9 AM tomorrow. Owner's manual says Dex III for this? I would have thought Dex VI. . .

you can use vi

its compatible.

dex vi is the dealer fill now

Haha saw on another thread to look for the M32 code in the glove box. This truck does indeed have the M32 code. Thanks for the info re: Dex VI

To add to this thread...what interval do you guys do your changes at? Owners manual says 50k, Haynes says 30k or severe use 15k. Curious to know what a good rule of thumb would be?

I change mine at around 25,000km or every two years , I tow and do alot of HWY driving. The winters and using the 4X4 I fell it's cheep insurance. This is my third year with the Taho, I changed it when I got it and I am due to change it but the tranny is on the way out. So a 6.0 and 4L65 swap is in the works.

Yea I was speaking with the tranny shop the other day and they recommend every 25 - 30k. Mine is going in next week to get an external cooler installed and I'm gonna have them do fluid and filter while it's there. Save me an afternoon in the garage.

Everytime I have someone else touch any of my vehicles they mess something up or do a shotty job, I would rather do it my self and make sure it was done right ,with quality parts. Way too many rip offs out there. in my area anyway

Yea I know what you mean. I'm very much a DIY'er for those exact same reasons. Right now my time is limited and this shop has a very good reputation so I'm hoping for the best.
