Elway Chevy in Englewood, CO

Just a quick anecdote from earlier today. I know that most of us have horror stories about getting ripped off at the dealership, but today I had a very pleasant experience at John Elway Chevy on Broadway in Englewood.

I'm about to change out my front/rear diff gear oil and transfer case fluid on my Tahoe, so I stopped by there to grab the required AutoTrak fluid. As most of you know, the stuff is over $10/qt list price, about the same as Mobil 1 gear oil. As the parts guy was ringing up my invoice, he saw the USAA logo on my debit card and said "So, USAA huh? Are you former military?" I said yes. He hands me my invoice and says "I threw a little discount on there for you". I thanked him, wished him a merry Christmas, and went on my way. When I got back to the car I took a look at the invoice, and he gave me 30% off! $15 for two quarts of ATII out the door.

Granted, that's not a lot of savings when you're only buying a couple quarts of fluid...but still, to have such a substantial discount applied simply because a total stranger recognizes you as former military? That's pretty cool. Dealerships still don't see much of my business for routine maintenance since I do most of it myself, but every now and then they do something to actually make you want to come back. Elway Chevy is a winner in my book. Just thought I'd share.

30 percent is 30 percent
When you own your own business and you have employees giving away your money like its theirs at their will you will then understand.

Best case scenario he could be authorized to do whatever he wants.
Worst case he could be a year away from retiring from a 25 year job and been handing out discounts so long he gets fired humiliated and thrown out of a good job.

I am sure it is an option to give a military discount as it is at most places. 30% discount just got them advertising on TYF.

I doubt many cashiers ask much for proof on it but if it was a large order or repeat customer I am sure they would ask. He gave him $5 off and made a customer happy.

I get it Yates but now every time someone types elway Chevrolet in Google this has a good chance of popping up. I'm just saying less is better sometimes even when showing gratitude.

I do own my own business, I have millions of dollars worth of inventory in my warehouse, and I have 9 employees who make deals as they see fit based on market pricing. In my industry, discounting equipment or giving your clients extra freebies is what earns referral business. You make money where you can and earn customers how you can. Good customer service is what keeps them coming back. Today I gave a long time customer who has spent tens of thousands of dollars with our company a significant discount on some lighting contactors for a contract he was working on. He knows that he can come to me for stuff like that and I'll take care of him, better than anyone else around here can. In turn, when he wants to buy circuit breakers or anything else he needs, he will pay a fair price and give me free advertising to boot. It's a reciprocal relationship, and that's how you build a successful business.

Customer service is what I got at the dealership the other day, and I felt compelled to share that story because I was impressed by it. If someone googles the dealership and finds my story, who gives a shit? The management? I doubt it. If ONE extra customer stops by their service department to buy something based on my good experience there, then they've already made their money back in spades. Do you really think they would fire a dedicated, well trained employee over a military discount? No, he's too valuable to them - ESPECIALLY if he has "25 years of experience" as you suggested. If you're the kind of person that would fire a tenured employee over some petty crap like that...well, I'm glad I don't work for you.

Lol. You are right in so many ways but wrong in so many others. Let's agree to disagree I was just saying that to be safe you put two many specifics in your tale. You are trying to turn it arround like I would fire the guy. I don't own my own business but an a operations director for a very large national company and have heard stories of people who lost their pension for way less. I have sat in court and heard comp cases for guys who we're getting screwed. I live in a city that is cut throat by any means and understand when and when not to explain too much. I was not trying to offend you or just trying or make it a right or wrong situation. I was just saying hey maybe this guy didn't want you to share your experience with the world. Haven't you ever worked for a ******* but your customers loved you and it made your boss hate you more?
