I'm thinking about building my own shroud and adding electric fans, but have a few questions:

I was thinking about getting 2 12" S Blade fans that flow 1200 CFM per fan. But what about a single 16" fan that flows about 2000CFM? I'm sure that 2 12" would be better and wouldn't pull that much more amps. And also do you think 2 12" fans will keep it cool? Also how are you guys wiring them up? Just a temp sensor to a relay? But what about when the AC is on? Can I hook them up to run on a low setting or should I just not worry about that part of it? I don't do too much in town driving, thats why I'm not too worried about it.

But post up your electric fan setup, I just want to put something together for myself rather than spending $400-500 on something that I can build for under $200 easily

Hey bro, there's already like 6 threads about this now just fyi.

As far as fans go, look for ones that have a high cfm/amp. Permacool fans are one of the highest rated in that regard. Bigger fan size with good cfm/amp ratio always means cooler temps - coverage is larger on the radiator.

B

Search showed nothing in this forum, just a few people mentioning them.

The thing I figured is that I would be cutting myself pretty close installing twin 16s since the radiator is only 34"x17" and I'm sure the 16" fans have a bigger shroud than 16"

I'm running two 16" fans on a 34" radiator and still have about 1/4" on each side.

go with a set of ls1 fans, much cheaper and effective.

Yeah, but I always seem to miss out on them. I found a guy locally that has some used, but used very little 12" s blade fans for $30 each so I might get them, but if I can fit 16" fans I may wait and get them

I would go with two 16" fans I currently have one it works good but I dont run an a/c system. If you want all the comforts and a cool running motor go with the dual 16" fans. As far as wiring my local advanced auto had a relay kit for 25 bucks it came with a temp sensor that installs in the radiator. I have mine set (you can adjust on set with the relay) to come on when it reaches170 temp when i get a second fan I will set it for the a/c relay to activate it and as a back up for high temp while im sitting in traffic. The instructions were very easy and if you get lucky your auto store manager is a gearhead like mine and has done tons of stuff to his car. I also bought the fan from advanced mainly because they carry the replacement motor so I dont have to wait to order one just go in and pick a new one up. All parts were Hayden no complaints so far. I mounted my relay in the nice storage box that gm provides us made for a clean install and relay stays dry! Let me know if you want pics.

Summit Racing sells a kit for some $500+ that comes with a dual fan, and all of the relays, and thermocouples, etc. to run your fans when you turn on your AC, and variably control the temperature. This is pretty much cost prohibitive, for the overall gain, however they do make some pretty hefty claims about increased HP and economy. I'm with 961500 on this one.

BB sells a harness to make fans PLUG AND PLAY and work as if they were stock. No need for relays and wiring hassels

Probably at a hefty price too. No offense, but they seem to be high on their pricing IMO

But I'm going to be ordering my fans tonight, but I need to make sure that 2 16" fans will fit. The demensions on the radiator are 34x17 but does that include the tanks on either side? I need to run out and measure it quick.

But I plan on running my own relays and temp sensor and wiring it in with the AC so it works correctly as though it were stock and for about $40. I'd just hook it up on a switch, but since the wife drives it almost as much as I do and she would forget about it, I'll go the extra way and make sure its done right.

But I'll have pics up hopefully by the weekend, but who knows what will come up LOL

Wiring it in with the AC and with temperature sensor probe, is not the stock way of setting it up.

No but it would function like a stock setup would.

But I looked up your fan kit, $90 isn't too bad but its more than I would like to spend. And it only list it working for 99-06 trucks, not a 97 like what I have

The temperature probe does not work like a stock setup. A stock set up will turn off the fans when you get up to a certain speed as your driving airflow is greater than what the fans can flow, saving you that extra load by not having to work the alternator.

jenna, just curious, how easy is it to install one of your efan harnesses? is it literally plug and play, or is it more of a find, splice, and play?

Its for 99 and up trucks according to their site.

And I know how the fans are suppost to work, I have e fans on my camaro and know that they will shut off at certain speeds, but its kind of hard to do a setup like that if its not suppost to be like that from the factory. And I don't run the AC alot so it doesn't really concern me that much and my truck will have daul batterys here soon so that will help with the load a little bit and then I'm getting a larger alternator someday when the system gets installed so a little more amp draw won't be a big deal

good thing i've got a 99 then. lol
but either way, ive already got dual batts, so im not worried about the drain. so i could just do it myself with relays, but I'm lazy when it comes to my own car, so the easier the better. lol. plus, i've seen what heppens to exposed relays in engine bays. the last thing i want is to lose my fans to the elements.

someone said they had pics of the install with the relay in the relay box or something.. i can has pics plz? lol:Handshake:

Here are the pics. Hapyspaz and myself did the rebuild on the truck he had the idea to put it in the tool box. I did a test fit to line everything up drilled the spots and used wire loom to hide the wires in the engine bay. There are two extra wires for the a/c relay so far everything is great turned out to be a great spot. As you can see left extra wire in the box looks a little messy but I plan on a second fan so I wanted room to play.
