When engaged, it by-passes anything downstream in the exhaust system. Guys mostly put them upstream of their muffler. Helps a little with power and increases the noise level of the vehicle.

How much power does the muffler rob from the motor? I would think cats would be more of a restriction than the muffler.

Not sure about the hp gain to be honest. I think it is more of a “card in the bicycle spokes” thing where it sounds cool but has minimal increase in performance, but I’ve never had them so that is just my outsider view.

I have seen them mainly on cars that people run on the straight track so they can have a street legal exhaust for during the week. I can see it there as you’re trying to get every fraction of available power.

They are a highway patrol’s dream to catch one installed on a vehicle here in Cali. It’s an EPA / CARB qualification for instant impound. You’ve gotta have a big wallet or diplomatic immunity to run one in the Golden State.

In my experience I lost power. There was a noticeable difference in torque loss with the cutout open.

I agree with the above folks.

If you want more noise, get an exhaust system with the appropriate noise level for your enjoyment. If you want more power, get a Black Bear performance tune.
