Dry start issue

Get a nasty noise on startup if the vehicle has been sitting for a few days. Thought the adbv on my oil filter was shot so I did an oil change. Still there.

It happens so berifly its difficult to tell if it's coming from the engine or transmission side of things.

Oil pressure while running is normal. No odd noises or other concerns. It's just this damn clatter on startup..

Haz anyone experienced something like this? Any idea what it could be or point me in the direction of some sort of remedy?

Can’t really hear anything in the video but my 04 5.3 started a little piston slap around the same mileage. Really nothing that can be done about it.

I bought a brand new 03 Ford 5.4 that sounded waaay worse that that at 12k miles. Needless to say I got rid of that truck real quick.

My thoughts are that your starter is on its way out, im not a mechanic but im thinking on cold starts, the starter is cold and the spring is not retracting fast enough and getting caught on flywheel, when hot starts it can retract normally... maybe, maybe not.. something like this... my 2 cts... maybe some pbblaster or something will help..

Possibly. I know it's a bit tough to tell on video but it sounded a lot "deeper" than would be a starter


Wonder if pulling the injector fuse and cranking it for a few seconds then popping it back in would give anything diagnostically relevant

Piston slap and lifter tap lasts a lot longer then that on cold start...slap and tap is normal the older ls’s so i guess you gotta get under the hood bud

I can't tell anything from the vid. It's like your mic was focused on the sound of the key being turned and muffled everything else.

Mine has a lifter tap for 2-3 seconds after it sits all week. I'm sure it's an AFM lifter bleeding down.

Even on your normal start vid you can hear a little catch at the end of the starter cycling. Very slight, but noticeable. The starter may be hanging up like previously mentioned.

Here's underhood. Little harder to hear past the standard mechanical noises, but that knocking/tapping/whatever when it first fires is audible - not an artifact of the camera

It is about impossible to diagnose anything by listening to a video. Use a stethoscope to pinpoint noises.

Not looking for a diagnosis. Looking for probable ideas of where to look or what to investigate. Or knowledge of any commonalities that may not be well known unless you've been around these rigs slot. You'll understand when I say this is difficult for me to poke and listen as I can only really look at it once every few days once it's sat. And even at that I'm a one man show. The act of turning the key means I can't be under the hood listening to stuff.

I know the starter idea was suggested but I'm not sure it's that. I've heard bad starters before and this doesn't sound or behave like any bad stater I've heard

Made it a little further. If I unplug the injector fuses and crank for 5 seconds, then plug it back in. No noise / no knock

Brainstorm with me:

Some sort of fuel knock (only on start after sitting)

Oil pressure related (sitting)

Possibly a failing oil pickup tube o-ring? Not really familiar with the oil systems on these to know if that's a possibility. Oil pressure while running appears normal

Listening via the Internet not that great for noise diagnosis, but all I heard was fuel injectors and a whine.

That one is easy to diagnose, $5 oil filter and a couple minutes of your time will tell you if it's filter related.

Sanity check: This the right part? I'm due for an oil change in 2 weeks. Will just add this in

Replacement appears pretty simple. Looks like the threaded bit the oil filter attaches to sandwiches that in. Remove that, remove the valve, install is reverse of removal?
