I have a 99 Suburban k1500 (4x4) 10 bolt 3.42 rear end. Just got the trans rebuilt, and the transfer case serviced. When I picked it up from the trans shop, the mech told me that there is a whining coming out of the rear end, possible bearing. How hard is it to rebuild the rear end? Is it worth rebuilding, or should I visit a junk yard?

Surely you aren't suggesting getting junk yard stuff and just putting it in your daily driver?? The whole point of getting something like that at the junk yard is to have it rebuilt while your old one is still working and not fully dead yet ...

With that said, you can rebuild a rear end at home on jackstands with lil more then normal hand tools. It's not easy and setting the backlash is something that not everyone is going to be able to do.
