So with my new motor, I have been chasing idle issues since it first ran (almost 1,000 miles on the new motor).

For a while, I had a bouncing idle between 500-700rpm while cold. Then it would hesitate on acceleration. That was fixed with a AC Delco Coolant Temp Sensor.

Then it has been idling in the right place (650rpm) however, it feels like a rough idle. Like the cam is real thumpy. So much so that when people ride in the Tahoe and we're sitting at a light they are like, "is this running the way it should? Feels rough.."

Last night, I had the second occurrence of a super high idle at cold startup. On a normal basis, I will start the truck and it will rise up to about 1,000rpm and then sit at about 800-900 while it warms up. Slowly lowering until it has heat in the motor, sitting at 650. Last night, I started it and it shot up to 2,000rpm and sat there at high idle. I let it sit like that for about 1 minute to see if it will come down and it didn't. So I'd throttle it a little to try and get it to kick down (as if there was a choke on it). It wouldn't go lower than 2k. So then once operating temp started rising and it was no longer "cold" I killed the engine, let it sit for about 30 seconds, then started it back up. It went to its normal place of 1,000 and then slowly lowered back to 800 while warming up.
Then driving home I was sitting at a light and it starts bouncing again. Sits at 650, then drops down to 500ish, stumbles, then jumps back to about 750, then drops to 500, up to 700.. Keeps bouncing.

I drove through it.. parked it for the night. Came out this morning to drive to work; starts at 1k.. slowly lowers until warmed up and idling (rough) at 650 like normal. No bounce.

What is up with this thing? It's like it goes through "moods" or something. It feels rough. It idles at normal place on RPM but doesn't necessarily FEEL right. Occasional high idle at cold start. Bouncing idle while warm (sometimes).
It's all over the place and its driving me bonkers.

Any help would be fantastic. Thanks y'all!

I too am having almost the same exact problem as you 95 Tahoe as well, only mine starts up and will die sometimes and sometimes it would be fine, and other times it will have a hunting idle just like you described. I changed my idle air control valve and about 6 months later, same problem. Changed it again, good for a few months then back to the same old same old. Have you tried anything with your idle air control valve? Such as looked for carbon or checked the resistance? Each time i changed mine i had no carbon build up and it had correct resistance...

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm still tryin to figure it all out.
I pulled all the intake and the TBI off, visually checkin the vacuum lines and everything looks good. Put it all back together and it still reacts the same. If I have a vacuum leak somewhere it's definitely hiding very well.

As for IAC, I might have a new one on it. During this whole process I actually had two different TBI units that I kept swapping pieces around.. One of them had a used IAC one had new. I can't recall which I ended up with now.
Maybe I'll have to go just get a brand new one and put it on anyway. I'm also considering doing the same with MAP sensor.

you may have a sticking IAC vlave or you need to get it scanned to find out what sensor is giving bum info to the computer.

have you checked for vacuum leaks again?

Yeah, my mechanic buddy went around it with the can of spray trying all the possible spots.. We never found any change. Until I start driving it...
:rage:

Yeah, the IAC is a new AC Delco and when I was recently driving it around (not while it was bouncing, when it was actually performing properly), the sensor was operating is it should (according to the plugged in computer we had running while driving).

Haven't had the thing plugged in when it is acting up though. It's hard to get it to reproduce the problem whenever I WANT it to. :Frustrated:

Thanks for the thoughts though guys. I will have to try and setup a time with my mechanic that we can plug it in and go for a longer test drive.. see if it will randomly go into another fit if we get a few miles of driving done in one test run.

With this being a 95 it's going to be really hard to see a vacuum leak on a scanner.

The scanner was in regards to the IAC.. I was watching to make sure its off and on in necessary sequences.. Looked correct when we first checked it all out.
I also was checking for TPS signals being correct as well. Looked good there.
Then we checked for leaks physically using the spray can method.. No changes in any idles as we sprayed in all the areas assumed possible for vacuum leaks.

My thoughts is that it COULD be the MAP sensor. I have not done any checks/scans/replacements of that sensor..
Anyone have any further information about that one? What should I do to check that?
Is it possible that it could sometimes be reading wrong, and other times could be reading correctly? Or something along those lines..
I think thats the biggest that that is losing me. It only happens now and again. Not consistant.
:hmm:

You can look at the MAP sensor data real time like the others and see if it's jumping around. Did you hook up an actual vacuum gauge and see what it's doing? Since this is a TBI induction system using the old methods of troubleshooting with a carb and vacuum gauge work nicely.

I have not personally tried that, no. Not sure if my mechanic has either.
Thanks for the info! Least gives me a direction to go.. thanks. :High 5:
