I have a 03 tahoe with 260,000. Its starting holding it shift from 2-3. I plan on rebuilding the 5.3 along with Cai, cam, full exhaust system and the HD conversion. Just something to have fun with.(donuts, burnouts etc.) Will a built 4l60e be enough to fit my needs. I really don't want the 4l80e because I have 1 going in my camaro.

do you want 1 and done or do you want a built 60e that may not hold? @Rocket Man has probably the best 60e you can buy and it broke. I went thru 2 60's before doing a 4l80. no regrets..you want to do donuts reliably in a 5k lb truck...I don't know if a 60e is the way to go..

if you are dead set on the 60e then a set of 4.10 or 4.56 gears may make life easier.

Sounds like a fun project.

I’m still not sure of what I broke- transfer case, torque converter or trans. So we can’t be condemning a built 4l60 just yet. Plus Im running a lot of hp with AWD which is unforgiving since the tires never break loose.

BTW I may be doing the conversion if it IS the trans so I might be asking you questions.

No problem..only rough spot would be that AWD xfer case adapter part. I would hope it's the torque converter . That trans should have held up to that blower..all good parts..

If I do it, the AWD would go and I'd convert to 2WD. The last time I looked on PT.net there wasn't enough interest to persuade the guy with the rights to make another batch. It wasn't even close. He needed like 20 people and there was about 6 after 6 months of waiting.

I have a neighbor who builds 4L60e transmissions for race cars. He has no problem channeling 600 or more hp through one. Additionally a man I met in WV does all the transmission work for every dealership in the area and some outside it. He said the 60 is stout enough for even many trucks. I wouldn't worry about the transmission.

The 80 changes some dimensions and adds unneeded complexity to the task without any gains for you.

Personally I'd be trying to figure out how to fit a 6L box in there. :)

I think I will just build the 4l60e and stay away from burnouts and donuts. I'll just leave that for the z28. I really just want it to sound good and look good. With the mods that I'm doing it's not going to be a dramatic change in hp.
