I know there is lots of info out there on how to do the swap but I want to put this up for anyone that is planning on doing it.

My original 4l60e went to 260k-ish and had rebuild after rebuild... I don't know if it was just bad rebuild parts or what. My tahoe is some sort of overland/ roadtrip build and I was nervous to take it anywhere. Lately the 4lslippery was having issues with reverse so I finally began the swap process.
This isn't going to be a complete write up but here is some info I struggled finding.

My rig- 2008 Tahoe PPV/SSV 4x4 with MP3023LD (NQH code) transfer case

Parts needed
4L80e-
Dust cover (amazon)

Fill tube ACDelco GM Genuine Parts 15832205

Transfer case adapter 15724745 - (2 seals with amazon bundle)

Cooler lines- I ran AN6 lines straight to the cooler. ICT Billet 4l80e adapter fittings (amazon)

Torque converter- I got a Circle D billet front 1800-2000 stall. With this guy you don't need to change your flexplate or run a flexplate spacer.

Throttle cable bracket- I ended up using both the 4l60e and 4l80e brackets to make one. The 4l80e bracket I had hit my front driveline... so I cut off the lower part and welded on the 4l60e lower.

Neutral safety switch bracket- My 4l80 came with one but with old style NSS. You can put the 4l60e NSS right on the 4l80e bracket.

Front speed sensor- I bought a brand new one just because. You NEED the pigtail for the sensor for wiring. I bought mine local.

Transfer case-
Input gear- Proactive Gears-19132978 Input Gear MP 3023; 32-Spline, 148MM.
4l80e has different spline count on the tail end so it will not match up to your transfer case
I have never taken mine apart so ended up replacing the 3 outside seals. Fairly cheap trip to the dealer. I was thinking about replacing the chain but they wanted like $450 for it.
This write up helped me with the tear down. Not exact same case but gives you a good idea. Go slow...

Tuner- I bought HP tuner MPVI3

Mods-
Passenger side ear on the 4l80 case is very close to the exhaust. I cut that off.

Drivelines. Front needs to be longer and rear needs to be shorter. I am lifted so my measurements wont be the same as yours.

Trans crossmember. 4l80e is longer so you need to get creative. I bolted my trans up, got the right height measurement and started fabricating.

WIRING-
This is the one I had a hard time finding info on.. Finally found another post. There are videos out there on how to take the connector apart. On the rubber insulator you can see the terminal letters.
1. On the main transmission connector Depin and remove-
K(orange), V(light Blue), S(white), T(Tan/Black), U(brown)
2. Move U(Brown) to S location.
3. You are going to use the ORANGE and LIGHT BLUE wires for wiring in your front speed sensor pigtail. Splice ORANGE to terminal A and LIGHT BLUE to terminal B on your front speed sensor pigtail.
Lower part of the harness is done. Now you go to your TCM plug in the engine bay. Backside of the adapter you will see terminal numbers.
4. Move Pin 45 to location 26(empty)
Button it all up carefully and that's all the wiring mods you need to do.

Tuning-
You need to do a segment swap to make the 4l80e work right. There is a good amount of videos out there on how to do this. This was my first time playing with hp tuners but it was pretty simple. Read your vehicle, gather its operating system number, find a 4l80e segment file with the same OS number, grab the trans files and diagnostic files and swap it into your current TCM. I ended up using a file from RedHeartBeat.

Thats it! I am certainly not an expert on how the wiring works or the tuning part of it but everything worked for me first try.

Thank you for your write-up and 'gotcha' points discussion. Very informative.

I suggest that you change your thread title to something like "How to Perform a 2008 Tahoe 4160 to 4180 Swap". This way, members will know that your thread is not a question for the Forum, but rather an informational/instructional discussion on the topic for the Forum's shared knowledge base.
