Anyone ever seen this?

So I go to have breakfast with a buddy this morning and come out to find my rear glass shattered. The gas lift arms were fully extended and the glass was hanging by the rear defroster wires.

It was closed and shattered, and because the glass wasn't there to keep the "hatch" closed, the struts lifted up.

I did it by itself as far as I can tell. I was inside maybe 30 minutes and came out to find it that way. I doubt it was a vandal as mine was the only one in the parking lot that was broken.

The glass shop wants $800+ to replace it and the salvage yard wants $200 off a wrecked one. I called the insurance company (progressive) and I'd have to pay my full deductible to get it fixed which is 1,000. I set the deductible higher since I only drive this truck about 10 days a month, the other 10 I'm in my PD Tahoe.

Guess I'm off to the salvage yard.

See if the salvage yard glass comes with the struts. Get them if you can as backups.

Good idea, didn't think of that. I'll call them and see. If not can i get them from the auto parts store?

Parts store yea. But call first because some don't carry them and have to order in from a warehouse.

Called the salvage guy and he will pull them off for me. Now I gotta figure how to get the old hinges apart. Got the E clip pulled but can't get the pin to come out...... Guess i need to get a bigger hammer.

I use to replace glass for a living. ive never seen it do it by its self, but anything is possible. luckily for you that is one of the easiest back glasses to replace!

Well with the bigger hammer at least you don't have to worry about hitting the glass.

lol it is really easy, open the rear hatch and look up at the hinge part of it. (both hinges are together the hatch and the glass u want to remove the glass) it will have a small c clip holding a rod in the hinge. remove clips on both sides and remove the pins. then its out

yeah just saw that. I had the clip off already just needed to move the hinge section for the glass (well the rubber frame really) off the post and it came right off.

Yeah, the glass new is outrageous, or maybe it's just ben that long since I've had to replace some. I'm scared to see how much they are for the 07-14 models.

yeah the large tempered pieces like that can be crazy expensive
