Another temp gauge question

1997 Tahoe 2 door with 5.7 engine.
Temp gauge at normal operating temp indicates 165 degrees.

I replaced the thermostat with a 195 degree.
At cold start I can see the temp gauge gradualy rise to around 200 degrees, then as the thermostat opens up it drops right down to the 165 mark and sits there.

Any ideas if I can get it to indicate a more accurate temp.
Bad sending unit?
Gauge works just seems inaccurate.

What really matters is the temp sensor sending data to the computer. Check and verify that. When I swapped my gauges I was tired of the volt meter and fuel level readings being off, I adjusted the needles, that's really your only option.

If no air in the system replace the sensor or check its connector.

How can i tell if sensor is sending data to computer?
I see the gauge move off of dead stone cold, can see the thermostat open, temp drops after Tstat opens and sits on the same mark.

I'll try a new sensor and see what happens.

You have to read the OBD info from the computer with a scanner to see what the computer is seeing.

Don't forget the computer sensor is on the thermostat housing and the sensor for the dash is on the left cylinder head just above the two front exhaust runners.

Picked up both sensors this afternoon for water bridge and cylinder head, will replace in the am and post results.
Used an IR thermometer and verified the temp at hose and water brige is approximatley 200 degrees.

Have to research a scanner tool, any recommendations?

Both sensors replaced with no change in Temp gauge reading; starts at dead cold, goes up to 200ish, tstat opens, temp settles at 165.
New thermostat,water crossover temp sensorand head temp sensor with ACDelco parts.
Is there something else left in the system beside the gauge itself?
Is there a way to replace the temp gauge as its part of the overall instrument cluster.
All other gauges in the cluster work properly.

May I suggest a ScanGauge II? It monitors the temps your PCM looks at. It's almost not worth fussing around with the stock gauge cluster.

Coolant temp and air intake temp as seen by computer sensors yes. Tranny temp sensor for computer on obs, no luck yet here. Would be really cool tho.

I can read my tranny temps. Are you saying you cannot on the OBS?

It is the same X-gauge that I use for my Avalanche.

Yeah the OBD x-gage I got had no results. But for poops and winkles I will give your coding a try. I think it was the system protocol that would not pass it although it shows in my ScanXL software.

yep tried it again and i had the same coding you used. on the obs it does not work apparently.

Odd...works great for me. I can see as soon as I hit 160* the hard 1-2 shifting starts up...

(Need to replace valve body)
