Hello, I got a 2000 tahoe z71 obs, I changed the oil and the oil filter was a short one, the manual says it should take 6 qts ? but it was 5 qts, should I be using a long filter? and do all ac delco filters have a check valve? thanks

Don’t think a long filter has a qt more capacity than a short filter. You might have mis-read the manual as I think they only take 5 qts.

5.7 engine is 5 quarts and the 5.3 engine is 6 quarts. The manual is likely generic and says what is for the 5.3. You are supposed to put in 5 quarts and then check level and add as needed anyway.

I use a longer filter just because I want more oil capacity. Plus, typically a longer filter than the application calls for is labeled as "heavy Duty" and we all know that is a good thing. Kind of like heavy duty shocks and heavy duty toilet paper, yea, that's a good thing too.

2000 is the mid year so there was some 5.7 models instead of the 5.3 5qts is correct for the 5.7. well maybe a shy more if you had it sitting a while and you had the front raised up significantly you might fit another 1/4 qt if you brought it straight to the top of the fill line.

GM put the remaining 5.7's in the OBS '00 trucks (Z71 and Limited).

IIRC, the PF47 is the short filter and the PF51 is the long filter. There is not a 1 qt difference there. With that said, I always prefer the larger filter when it fits. I run the longer filter on my 03 5.3L
