Good Idea? Or should I just cam/ 243 Heads/ Springs?
Ls1's are running for 2300 with 4L60E Trans in L.A. (I'm in Chicago btw.)
Anyone know what needs to be done for the swap though?

You know what would be super cool. If you went back in time to a 383 supercharged. Cheaper to build and is gonna be one of a kind

imo Engine... its no replacement for displacement. I would even try getting a 6.0, milling the heads, and then caming that... should still come up to be less cost. and IMO it can be made more powerful.

You have lots of researching to do... this should be a no brainier... what exactly do you want for your truck? and what is the budget?

I would go w a 6.0L. Most used LS1 are high dollar and came out of a sports car so they have had the piss ran out of them. Plus 6.0L will be a direct replacement for the 5.3L. Meaning not having to change oil pan, intake or accessory's. You can just drop it in. You will just need a little tuning on the PCM. A stock 6.0L w no mods will give you about 100 more RWHp and 100+tq over a 5.3L/4.8L.
Now do heads and cam on that 6.0L and your looking in the 400hp range.

I'd go with either an ls1 or 6.0 depending on what you find for a good price. Don't worry you just need the long block everything else you have will transfer over.

Only thing about an ls1 is it is around 100lbs lighter. This will raise the front end of your truck a little bit.

Not cheaper to build. Quit spreading misinformation on subjects you have no personal knowledge of.

Swapping an intake will be necessary anyways to drop the motor in and the oil pan takes maybe 5 minutes to switch over on an engine stand.

I would cam it. The 5.3Ls can push out some good power with the right mods.

For the price of the LS1, I would drop in a 6.0L, can be had for cheap. And mod the crap out of it!

Yes, cam can be a good way to go depending on what you want. One of the coolest trucks Ive road in had a 5.3L. It was modded w/ a 224 cam, long tube headers and a stall converter. That truck hauled a** and sounded mean w/ the lope. It ran 8.7 in the 1/8th mile on 20'. Truck could not hook up.

Now that being said that was a 4200lb step side reg cab truck. Our Tahoe's and Yukon's have a lot of a** to pull. Thats why people say 6.0L, bigger motor to help pull that big SUV down the road.

Alright So I guess I'll go with the 6.0.
Found one on ebay 103k miles out of an 05 escalade, $1,500 + $200 Shipping.
Anyone got a better price than that?

Man, Thats out of a Escalade then that means its a LQ9 instead of a LQ4. Lq4 came in work trucks pretty much. They only put the LQ9 In SS trucks, escalade and stuff like that. That means a higher compression motor which if I rember right was rated a 345hp. Bad ass find for the miles IF it is a LQ9.

There are better finds out there but not for the Lq9 really. You can find High mls LQ4 for $500 to $800 if you look hard and can deal w 140 to 160 mls. See I got lucky Im buy a whole truck from my dads work for $500. Its a 2002 2500 reg cab long bed that's all beat up. It has 140mls on it. But I get the 6.0L 4l80e trany and a parts truck out of it.
But that deal is a.... I just got lucky kinda of deal.

there is no better really. lq9 is going to have higher compression and have a little bit more power but if you want to look into a forced induction you'll want an lq4 with less compression. lq4 can usually be had for cheaper and they're only slightly less power which can be fixed with tune and small mods.

Well there's a little more info to give then just a little different compression. The LQ9 is 10.1 to 10.4 depending on what source you read. Also all LQ9s will ALL come w/ 317 heads (similar as the 243, but with larger 76cc chambers) (243 heads are the heads they put on the 405hp Z06)
Not all LQ4 come w the 317 heads and the comp is only 9.4:1 like a 5.3l.

Either motor will be bad ass in your truck!! A lq9 is just like a 40hp bonus. SUPER CHEVY shows LQ4 w/ 317 heads at 360hp (engine dyno I'm sure) and the LQ9 at 400hp. Read up on it, a lot of good info. Like little things that make them different like having floating pins and stuff like that.

BUT again LQ4 or LQ9 will both be bad ass to have!!!! a lq9 is just like getting a little bonus when you buy.

X2

The LQ9 has Flat Top pistons, and a shit load more mid to top end power, 93 octane required. Take a Denali (lq4) and a Escalade (lq9) on a trip on the hwy, and see the difference. run them side by side.

Here is a pic, of my Vortec Max (LQ9).

Im about to put 6.2 heads on it with Fast & 102mm... thats what you do to make serious power. 525ish

OP you have A load of research to do.

thanks, and Yes, I am putting 6.2 L92 heads on my 6.0 VMax. New Fast intake, 102mm Throttle Body, and a custom grind cam. It can be done, its just not a simple head swap.
