4WD Tahoe LT Question

Just bought a 22 Tahoe LT without max trailer.

How does the 4WD system work???
-It has a mechanical rear locker that is self activated with wheel spin. Is that in 2WD, 4WD and Auto 4WD?
-In 4WD HI does the center diff lock?
-No mater what mode the front diff is always open?
-Is Auto 4WD basically a AWD system, all diffs open but traction control moves power? If this is true in 4WD HI will the system try to push power between the two front tires using traction control/braking?

1. Read locker will lock up with wheel spin an 2 or 4wd
2. 4wd activated rhe transfer case to front drive shaft. An actuator engages the front axle to the gearset to spin with the drive shaft
3. Front diff always spins with the wheels in 2wd. Locked in with 4wd. 4wd AUTO engages the front axle, but doesn't send power until rear wheels slip, then clutches in the t-case lock up to send power to the front axle.
4. AUTO is similar to AWD in that it's available when needed, but doesn't send power until wheel slip is noted. Releases one traction is reestablished and is in waiting mode again.

Thanks for bringing this up, I am still learning how this system exactly works as well. Here is a good read on the transfer case operation:

Great reference! I should have been clearer that there is a clutch pack in the transfer case but not a center diff lock, per se.

Thanks! Wish there was an operational video to show how the actual mechanics of it works and what the parts look like. Would love to watch Precision Transmissions do a YT video on one. Or somebody of the like ya know?

Check transfer case fluid often. Careful with the drain and fill plug, they are aluminum and very soft. Pull the fill plug first, if you drain it and cant pull the fill plug you're screwed.

+1 and just want add that there is no center diff lock.

I just want to point out that the 2021+ DOES NOT have a rear locker!! The 2021+ has the G86. An eLSD if you have the Air Ride in the Chevy Z71, and a mLSD if you are in a non-Air Ride. I believe ALL of the Yukon AT4's and the all Middle East sold Chevrolet Z71's came with the eLSD regardless.

Yes it is unfortunate, I wish we had the G80 but we do not...
