2007 Rear Main Replacement

My 07 with 5.3 (273,000) has sprung a pretty good leak in the rear main. I don't have the tools and set-up to change so I was thinking of taking in to our local wrench who we have do work when needed.

My question is - any thoughts or experience on what one should expect to pay for the job?

been a while since I had one done but i'm thinking $500-600 roughly, mostly its labor in dropping the trans and putting back in, stealer would probably charge almost twice that. prices could be higher now

Shop time is 7.1 hours. The seal and gasket are about $26 each plus oil and a filter.

Thanks Swath, I have to decide if its time to part ways after owning for 244,000 of the 273,000 that's on her. Maybe its time to move up to a 2014-2015 model.

That seems a reasonable number number to consider a new truck

You’re going to have a pleasant time looking for a <14 vehicle. The depreciation has fallen off and they’re an open book for predictably.

The big thing that’s going to bite you is the clear & paint letting go on the hood & roof. If you find a truck with intact paint, ceramic coat both at a minimum or have a shop prep and clear both to avoid the pitfall completely.

We waited to respray the failed hood on our 08 (that failed in 17) w/ PPG for $350 when the bumper was in for repair. The roof will be about $650. If I had known the paint was that venerable, I deff would have ceramic coated it until the respray was budgeted. Figure 7-9 years of life for the paint & dash.

So around $750-$800 which is about what my guess would be.
