Good call by the owner of the shop. He wants to do the right thing.

Maybe, or maybe he's trying to do some damage control. I'm sure he doesn't want bad publicity. Word or mouth is a mofo!

Yea, you know what they say, "one pissed off customer will tell 10 people and one happy customer will tell just one person".

I commend them owning up to their mistake and refunding you. I would either consider using that shop for "easier" repairs in the future (repairs with something that both you and the manager know what's up) or scratch them off the list but at least leave it as an amicable separation.

I have used them before and was very happy. Maybe it was that the tech was new.

Yea, the shop seems ok as you have used them before with good results but maybe the tech is new or he got "tunnel vision". That has happened to me before.
