Hi there, I am looking at purchasing a 2004 Yukon with 83,000 miles. For it being that old it is in pretty nice shape for a Minnesota vehicle. My question is the frame still has spots that still have the factory GM coating on it.

Is there any areas on this I should be looking at that are known for rotting on the frame? Or any other things in general I should keep a eye on?

Thanks for your time.

As far as I know, nothing special about the frame. As always, make sure the weld spots are good/not bubbling. It's mostly body damage you see that you might want to take a close look at.

Sounds like it almost was a summer vehicle.... Thats low miles for sure...

Frame, check everywhere that is a spot to collect standing water, I think spare tire mount can hold a bit up there, probably bumper bracket and attachment points... cab mounts are flat and can hold water a bit... Like said above, check welds for sure... Check all suspension mounting points etc...

Sounds like you found a gem up there in the land of salt on roads...

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

I would just crawl under there and look at EVERYTHING, should be done before driving. If you have a working knowledge of what to look for, go for it. If not, then take to a trusted shop and have them inspect. If the seller has nothing to hide, they should allow it.

Here are some pictures. Those are the worst spots on the frame. I will check it with a hammer.

Lots of surface rust and even some eaten a bit it looks like. I would go over that thing with a mirror and flashlight and pick it a part.

Sorry, but I gotta say that I expected better than what the pics show.

Yea, like @TollKeeper said, what is the asking price. If is low enough and the rest of the rig is in great shape, it may be worth it to purchase and do needed frame work on it if you find it needs some. That is why clear pics will be important for us to help with opinions on that rust.

@PNW VietVet - This may help the thread..

Price isnt bad, it is overpriced in my opinion, but in this market, its about right honestly.

Looks to be fully loaded non-Denali

If I hadnt bought my Esky, I would be looking at it.

Edit - I would be looking at it, until I saw those pics he posted. I need to remember to stick to my rule about buying vehicles north of Arkansas, and east of Kansas City.. DONT DO IT! LOL. This thing is 3000 more than my Esky was, and its 2 years older, with the smaller engine.

A little pricey, but looks to be in great shape. I can't believe this removable insert is still with it. It's just missing the ashtray that goes in it.20210708_150200.jpg
They're always missing.

I know of what you speak about the rule of buying vehicles. I lived and wrenched and ran shops in KC, Mo. and saw it all. I just think there is more frame rust than I have seen.

On the plus side, it does NOT have the Z55/Z95 suspension, but does have the ZW7

The build sheet for it..

G80 - Good
GT4 - Good
L59 - Good if you have E85 available
NZZ - Good
UQ7/U2K - Important info if you want to upgrade radio
C5H - This one is odd, 5300 GVWR

Yeah Minnesota vehicles. Tough to find clean ones. Hard to get ones out of state.

I will be negotiating price. I am going to have a independent shop look at it on Saturday for me.

Thanks for all the input!

Appreciate it.
