I was driving my 2004 Tahoe LT 5.3 with 4L60E on a 400 mile round trip. On the way home I was cruising at 80 mph with no issues. About 30 miles from home I had to come to a stop and then proceeded. After that it would not shift into 3rd or 4th gear. I had to put it in 2nd gear and limp the rest of the way home. Since the cell light was already on due to a bad O2 sensor I didn't see the P0741 code until I got home and used my OBD2 scanner. I sure hope I don't have to replace the whole transmission as I just spent 3k having this one put in over a year ago. I don't have a bidirectional scan tool but I will pick one up. Any recommendations on a scan tool that won't break the bank? Thoughts on my P0741 issue?

Thanks for any input gang!

Well my first thought is your TCC solenoid may not be engaging, throwing that code. Not shifting beyond 2nd into 3rd, could also be solenoid related (2-3 stuck ON). Solenoids are easy to replace, get name brand, and may want to replace the harness as well. So, when you say it doesn't shift into 3rd, does 2nd gear just wind out and hold (possible solenoid), or does it seem like shifting into Neutral (3/4 clutch pack or hydraulic circuit)? You can pull the transmission fuse or disconnect the control harness from the trans, forcing it into 3rd gear and check if it moves. @NickTransmissions is the expert here, so whatever he says will be the best advice.

If I put it in Drive or 3rd gear when it shifts on its own 2-3 shift just acts like neutral. I know what it's like when the 3-4 clutch goes out as I've had that happen while driving with the original transmission. This one was still running strong until I came to a stop which is really strange to me?

It sure sounds like 3-4 to me. That hydraulic circuit is longest with many opportunities for a leak. How's your fluid level and can you check your pressure? History, maintenance? May have to drop the pan for a look. Others more knowledgeable will jump on.
