I’ve been thinking about what intake and TB I can upgrade to on my ‘03 5.3 Flex. The TBSS and NNBS are the same? Didn’t realize I’d have to get a x-link harness. That makes the idea a lot less appealing. [emoji53]

From my research yes the NNBS and TBSS are the same but I'm not a pro on the subject. I do know that an Xlink is required for any throttle body that is 6 pin being installed on a truck that was originally 8 pin.

I don't know how much power is really gained as I never did a NBS and 78mm TB swap to a TBSS with 90mm for back to back testing. However every article I've seen praises the TBSS combo.

The NBS 6.0 and 5.3 TB are 80 mm and good to about 500 HP and a 90mm isn’t going to do a thing for a NA engine. Even with my blower I don’t need a bigger TB, with a smaller pulley I ran out of injectors( again) but not TB.

I agree the 90mm is overkill for an NA motor. Only put it in because I had it and wanted to solve the reduced engine power BS that the 87mm was causing (I think). But one could argue "why did gm put a 90mm on the vette if it wasn't going to make more power?".

I do believe that a bigger TB makes a difference on boosted applications! I assume it would let the blower suck air easier and likely increase boost. May not be noticable at low boost levels or even with a butt dyno but every bit helps. It may also have a minor effect on IAT which are always a struggle with hot air intakes.

But again the gains are probably not financially worth it. That's exactly why I don't have a giant 102mm or whatever the big one out now is. Also my experience with the LS2 is pure 100% reliability even at 19psi.

Good to know. Thanks Mark. [emoji106]

ETA: was that flex injectors?

Did some pulls on my way to work today and as expected I see absolutely no change on the AFR gauge or in the butt dyno. I remember reading somewhere that the TBSS/NNBS intakes are designed for optimum flow with the 87mm. Can't find the article though pretty sure it was a Richarld Holdner article.

I'm sad to announce the death of a 10 year friend. Haven't done an autopsy yet but I'm assuming COVID-19 got him. Was driving across town pushing 75-80 with music playing pretty loud and of course the bass knob turned up. Suddenly the deep clear lows turned to some terrible flapping noise and I knew he was dead.

Turns out 10 years of abuse is about the life expectancy of a JLW3-V2. I've no joke had it since 2010/2011 and had it in at least 9 vehicles many of which it just rolled around the trunk due to not being strapped in. There no visible damage but when I push the cone in I can hear a bad noise.

Heres some inside pics of the custom box.

10 years is not bad at all! I have had my 10W3V3 for 6 years and I bought a 12W3 for the Tahoe in 2019. Never had any issues with my JL stuff.

The Tahoe needs a set of components up front. It has been on the list, but not a real high priority because I have some decent 6.5" Rockfords.

Yep can't complain a bit, Its seen and played in temps ranging from -30* to 108* and possibly more. Hopefully I get another 10 years out of the new one! I'm really anxious to see if the new one hits harder.

I actually just gave away the original JX250 amp i originally bought with the dead 12".

What amp are you using now?

Nice! I never could bring myself to fork over the money for a JL amp. My Saturn (commuter/got me through college) has a Kenwood Excelon X500-1 and an X301-4 and the Tahoe has the 5 channel version. It is an X801-5.

It was painful and one of the main reasons I only got 1 "do it all amp" instead of 2 dedicated amps. Totally worth it though! That old and now deceased 12W3 felt like a new beast with the JL RD power. I had it on the JX250 for a few years then multiple other craigslist amps promising more power but never seemed to be much better and usually overheated after an hour or so of playing. Then finally got a JD500 for a few years and that went to a Slim W3 in my Silverado so it was time.

My buddy said to play it at about half volume for an hour or so.

Quick Google search says half volume for 2 weeks and never exceed half. Well I already broke that rule so oh well. The first song I put on it seemed really weak and then after the trip to Home Depot and back at half volume it seemed stronger. So maybe I didn't do it the proper way but it seems as good or better than the last one which i know I never "broke in".

You wanna gradually stretch the surround and spider, but mainly the surround. It's rubber that has been in one position since being made. Ever got a new rubber band out the bag and immediately stretched it too far, too fast and it snapped? So you grab another and stretch it a little at a time and you can feel it limber up. After that, it stretches to that length much more easily. Same effect with the sub's surround. Hot weather helps the break-in go much quicker.

When I break in a new sub, I leave it in my shop, either free-air or in an oversized vented box if available, and play test tones on repeat from an Autosound 2000 disc I copied to my shop PC. I start at nearly mid-bass notes and gradually drop the frequencies, playing each one for about five minutes until I get into the lower bass frequencies, then I play them a little longer.
