20" wheels to 17"

Inked a deal on a 2012 and it has 20" OEM wheels with a lower profile tire. I still have a my 2003 that has the OEM 17" wheels. The all terrain tires on my 03 are hardly broke in and have a much taller sidewall v's the tires in the 2012 with the 20's. For off road use, I much prefer the extra sidewall.

Anyone know if the 2003 17's will fit a 2012 with 20's?

From my experience. Them 17s will not clear the brake caliper unless you use spacers. But the wheel itself will fit the wheel well

Very good point. I do recall that my 03 gen benefited from a later year break upgrade. I cant remember what year model the break upgrade was from, but I do not recall wheels being involved.

Should work fine. The GMT900s used a 17 inch wheel. The smallest wheel on the K2s was 18 inches if memory serves. Typical offset for a GMT900 wheel is 31 mm with some going as little as 24 mm.

I’m gonna retract my comment. I had 16s. Maybe the wheel design was different

But in the situation I experienced was when my neighbor had a flat on his NNBS Yukon. He asked to borrow one of my wheels. I had a NBS at the time so I gave him a stock 16” wheel and it didn’t fit over his front brakes without a small spacer.

Finally got this deal wrapped up Thursday afternoon and got the truck home. Got the wheels swapped yesterday.

Yes, the 17" fit on a 2012 in place of the 20". The 17's have 255/75 and the 20's have 275/55. The rolling distance was exactly the same, so the speedo is good, not recal needed.

So right now, the only short term downside is ive temporarily given up my TPM's left on the 20's. When things slow up, ill get some TPM's and drop the rig off at the tire store to have them installed.

Honestly, I like the style of the 20's better, but im a function over looks kinda guy. This rig will go off road, so id rather have the taller sidewall. Overall, I think the rig looks better now. Heres a before and after.

Oh, if anyone wants a set of 20's with a fairly new set of tires, ill make you a sweet deal! Just note though, they come with a 2003 Tahoe attached to them, lol.

Nice ride with either set!

Mine came with 285/55 R20 sport treads. I ditched for narrower 245/75 R16 mismatched mild AT tread that were better for one winter until I found something better.

I really wanted to be back to 265/75 R17s, ideally.
18s at the largest.

Looking towards having to buy replacements...
I found there were more affordable options for 17 and 18 inch rims, when it came to AT tires, than there were for 20s. Key words for me are "more affordable".

It is finally back to its original factory stock Z71 wheel/tire configuration she had the day she was made.

They hit the sweet spot! I am really happy with the 265 width. Wider stance, but not so wide they'll float. 75% Sidewall Aspect Ratio on 17s offers a great ride for New England's perfect roads (LOL).

I really like the fatter sidewall look. But, then again, I am old-school. Fatter sidewalls were the bomb for all the cool trucks and SUVs! I know tire technology has changed a lot, but the thought of 50% sidewalls bouncing off hard things still just makes me cringe!

looks good. I like the 17s for sure. I'm definitely itching to make the switch as soon as I can sell my 20s.

i just switched from 265/70/17- to 275/55/20 and the 20 is physically nearly 3" taller. so my rig is up 1.5". in my case the ride is way better. and the 17"s are the stock size. Curious....
