02 ignition issues...still!

Hey y'all...what happened with Tapatalk? Anywho...ive asked before about ignition tips as mine seems to not work at all now... I've tried everything from checking all the fuses and relays, wedging the ignition plug etc...i was able at times to do the fast key crank, wire wiggle and it would start...but nothing now. Do y'all think it's the key tumbler OR the passlock sensor or both? I even did the key relearn for an hour but that was a fail. Please help!!

I looked but only commented on someone else's post having the same issue. YouTube points to either passlock sensor, or the small 3 prong plug wedge trick but I've tried all those things. All dash lights and guages work, just no crank.

You said you checked all fuses and relays, just want to confirm that you checked the fuse panel on the driver's side dashboard, you have to open the driver's side door to get to it. There's one in there that has to do with crank or start can't remember what it's called.

Yes, I checked every single fuse on the inside as well as outside. I even reversed the starter relay with the headlamp relay...relays are good...i checked with the local dealership and the for the harness and it's no longer made?. So I'm wondering now if it's the key cylinder or the passlock sensor?

When you say ignition switch, do you mean this entire harness or just the little box that goes in underneath the key cylinder? The pic below is the a.c. Delco from Auto zone btw.

Yes, I am talking about that ignition switch. Depending on the three choices I talked about. They are not all the same, depending on options. Where you put the key in is called the key and tumbler assembly/ignition lock cylinder. When just guessing at these things, you brought up a good guess as well, the passlock sensor.

I believe the part from AZ is the D1466E. It crossed with the GM part for my vin/z. I was incorrect in saying GM no longer made the switch...they are just more pricy. As far as the passlock, I'm not getting that indicator on the dash...furthermore, I only have the security light flash at start up and key off...solid when door is shut. The part at AZ is $50 less than at the dealership and it's a.c. delco.

at the other end of this scenario is the "starter" have you tried jumping it from the relay port in the underhood fuse box? or tried hitting it with a hammer? or bench tested it?
just swapping relays does nothing to verify the starter is operational.

AS Doubeleive says, check the starter first! Dont need to do anything at the key to do this test. Just get under and jump red wire terminal to small wire terminal on solenoid and the starter should start to spin. Just try a quick bump to see what happens. If it works then starter is good to go and you have a problem in your start circuit.
One fuse all the other guys have left out is the wire at your starter solenoid (small gauge wire) is not just a wire. It is a fusible link which is essentially a fuse. Inspect that wire from the solenoid terminal to 1ft and see if the wire insulation is bubbled, bulged or disfigured. If it is then it "blew" and needs to be replaced. Also a possible cause of failure is the ring terminal on the end of the fusible link that connects to the starter solenoid is corroded. I have seen this many times on all brands of vehicles. Remove and clean it with wire brush. Another common failure on vehicles with age is the actual electrical ignition switch which is usually mounted on the steering column and is what your ignition lock cylinder actuates when you start the vehicle with the key. The contacts within the switch eventually get burned. These can be checked to see if they are the cause but needs someone that knows how to use a voltmeter and can read electrical diagrams and interpret the values shown during testing.

starters can be temperamental also, they can get a flat spot inside and sometimes work and sometimes not, fought this issue on my 03 Silverado, replaced a bunch of stuff and then come to find out it was the dang starter the whole time . Hence why I said smack it with a hammer, if it works each time you do that then there's your sign.
the starter cable can go bad also so test voltage from the battery to the starter while the key is in the start position should be 10.5 volts or more
and while you are at it test the battery they can go bad as well might show 12v but has no amp's (cca) had a 6 month old battery just go bad within minutes.
just easy things to eliminate before chasing down the ignition portion.

Well...after wrecking my brain about the ignition switch I ordered from RA...i realised the only "real" thing I hadnt done was give the ole starter a light tap or two like my pop taught me as a kiddo...so I tried that and I'll be damned if it didn't start right right up...guess this rig will get a new ignition switch and a fresh starter!

Alright fellas, I got the starter pulled from my Tahoe and the reman a.c. Delco locally from Advance. Got it installed and voila... thanks for the pointers. I really appreciate it.
