Hello friends, I am new to this forum.

I had a 2009 Suburban that I loved and adored until my parent's sold it.

A few years later, my wife and I are contemplating getting another big vehicle in the near future. As we start a family we want to go on adventures that require a little more towing capability. But we are still thinking a Suburban rather than a Silverado or Sierra.

What are the functional differences between the 2007&2008 versus the later generation models, 2009+ I know that in 09 they introduced the 6 speed transmission. (Which is why my first one was an 09), but any other functional differences between the years? Any insight is helpful! Thanks!

Sometimes parents have no clue what they've inadvertently done to their kids ...

If you only require 'a little more towing capability', then I've a question for you:
do you remember what axle gear(s) your previous '09 Suburban had? If it had 3.08, then you want one with 3.42.
If it already had 3.42, then you'll want to upgrade whatever Suburban or XL you get to 3.73 or 4.10 (nevermind whatever gear comes with it originally).

If you get a Denali or an Escalade, those also come with a 6L80E, and I'll still advise 3.42 or 3.73 even with a 6.2L V8.

No matter what you get, disable Engine Half@$$, and get the ecm & tcm tuned so the engine and transmission last longer.

'09 was the first year for air conditioned seats, at least in the Suburban/Tahoe, not sure about the Esky/Nali.

Great, thank you so much for your insight! I don't remember the gear ratio on my old '09 burb. How do I find out the gear ratio? Also do the 2500's from 09-13 have different gear ratios as well? That's something we also talked about since they will have more robust towing capabilities. Again thanks for the insight and knowledge!

Just a heads up, the 2500s will ride like an old covered wagon without some weight in the rear.

So if you don't do a lot of towing or you don't tow heavy then a 1500 is probably going to be more comfortable.

With that being said, if you do tow heavy or alot a 2500 is really hard to beat as they are pretty heavy duty.

Give it your VIN. Regardless of what you had, if you want 'a little more towing capability' from a 5.3L, you'll want 3.42-GU6 minimum.
If your next vehicle has 3.08 (GU4), upgrade to 3.73 (GT4). Nevermind 4.10-GT5; you did not say 'a whole lot more towing capability'.

If you're lucky enough to find an Escalade or a Denali with a 6.2L & 3.42-GU6, disable Engine Half@$$, and be happy ...
