4l60e problem

Thanks for the advice so far guys!

I'm going to remove the shift kit I think and put a normal separator plate back in and maybe swap the valve body for one out of a known good trans.

Would one from a 4L65e fit ok?

The 4L60 is a 99 and the 4L65 is a 2003

Let's get back to basics before proceeding. Rebuilds happen for 3 general reasons

1) poor maintenance and care
2) product defect failure
3) change of use/spec

For grins sake, let's ignore the first one. For every rebuild you hear about, there is another that is going just fine after 200k, 300k etc.

Product failure: There are some great writeups discussing the various problems with the 4l60e. Under normal, granny use, they never materialize. But if you drive it just so , they show up (check ball hammering, cracked piston etc). When rebuilding these, you might as well build with upgraded parts so the the just so usage does not recreate the problem (upgrade separator plate, metal piston, etc)

For the third category: racing, towing, Jack rabbit, we're looking at some custom stuff to adapt to the specific needs. Custom includes upgraded parts as well as tuning the shift points to match the parts and driver. E.g. Vette servo to hold the band better during towing or racing.

The basic transgo kit ends up bridging both category 2&3. It attempts to easily fix some failing product, and tries to change shift points with hardware. For the weekend warrior, this might work dvr fur you, assuming you are driving it just so, once in a blue moon.

I had suggested the sonnax stuff as it was originally more focused on fixing the product problems, rather than special uses problem. They do have upgrades for special uses as well.

When installing/removing kits, there are replacement parts (ie springs) and modifications(ie drilling). Replaced parts are tossed and modifications are permanent (and may not work well with a item oem part). So, you can't just remove the shift kit unless you have the original parts to put back in. And besides, the original symptom being masked b the shift kit may return when that part of the kit is removed (ie 1-2 bump).

Can you stick a 4l65 valve body on a 4l60 - I'm not a parts expert, but gut feel is no unless you are a tuner. I know builders buy specific year range valve bodies typically.

What year vehicle did you put the 4L60 in? Is the valve body from the same year as the transmission? There should be a serial number stamped on the passenger side pan rail (i.e. 6KCD XXXXXX), check it to verify year and model. All of the symptoms seem to point to low line pressure.

I've put it in a 2003 Steve. The valve body is also a 2003 and the 4l60 is a 1999 a second far as I'm aware, I'll check the serial numbers when I get a chance.

What does low line pressure point to in terms of repairing? Valve body?

Oil pressure is created with oil pump (transmission removal) there is a valve that regulates the pressure - ~ 80 psi at idle and over 200 at WOT.

Bad seals, worn valves, messed up separator plate could cause loss of pressure. Or a bad pressure valve/solenoid.

A shop should be able to attack a pressure gauge to the side of the case and then use a scan tool to command the solenoid to change pressure which can be monitored via the guage. Recommend this (diagnostic fee) before throwing parts at possible problems.

Check Amazon they have a kit with all the rebuild parts for the transmission. Good news is the kit installs after you drop the transmission pan. I ordered one for my 04 denali that has the 4L65E. It also does the 4L60E.

Less that 100 dollars. Hope that helps

My 04 has 370,000 kms now.
Had the knock valves replaced last year and rebuilt the top end, no oil leaks anymore. I had some blown seals it was sucking in more air and so the computer was just dumping in more fuel. Should have great mileage after the kit is installed.

I want to know what a knock valve is. Also I wasn’t aware a 4l65 could be rebuilt just by dropping the pan. Interesting.

Hi I bought a transgo kit for my 04 Gmc yukon xl. It delays shifts. If you let off the throttle it will shift. It doesn't make noises but seems to downshift fine but delays the shift. I did see someone on here try this kit for the symptoms I have and it worked.

I went to a transmission shop today and they had a guy from the shop test drive. He is saying I don't have a second gear and it is shifting from 1st to 3rd gear.

All I know is it cannot shift into second. He said worn bands but cannot verify. Yet doesn't make sense that someone with the exact symptoms of mine it fixed the problem.

Any ideas? Thinking of getting a second opinion on this.

Sorry that was a knock sensor I was explaining. Bad news my trans needs a rebuild but they guy uses the valvetrain kit I bought. Seems the trans uses one band for 2nd and 4th gear. He verified that it is only using 1st and 3rd which are on another band.
