I've been thinking about blacking out the chrome trim and bumpers on my 04 Yukon and eventually getting a matte black rim setup. I saw this stuff at Autozone the other day and it looks like it would work well for this project. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/shadow/. Has anyone tried using this stuff on chrome? How does it look and hold up?

I have been looking at it for a few weeks also, does it come in different colors or just black? Was going to tint the chrome on the bumpers and the lip of my rims similar color to my body.

I have used the shadow kit. As long as you prep very well it work out nicely. If you need pictures I will get them. There is another member, whiteout, I think is his name that has a few picture and a topic about the kit floating around here somewhere.

Some pics would be great if it's not too much trouble. I was originally looking for the smoke metalcast but my AZ was out of it and I saw the shadow kit. I might give it a shot.

Ok, here are some older pictures. My problem was I used painters tape to mask off the valence and the paint adhered to the tape so when I pulled the tape off the shadow paint came with it. I also went to an automatic car wash, the one where you sit and it circles you, and that pulled some off as well due to the initial painters tape mishap.

So, make sure to prep very well.

Also, if you do do this, make sure to do one long paint spray all the way across the bumper. Not just spray a few inches stop, spray a few inches stop. You can notice the back bumper is a lot better looking than the front. On the back I did one long spray then stopped, shook the can, the another long spray across the whole bumper then stopped, etc...

Thanks for the pics. That looks sharp. How much work is involved taking the side chrome trim off of the truck? Is it on with adhesive or clipped into the plastic molding.

It's not too bad. They are just on there with some adhesive. For starters, you will want to do it on a hot day. Just park it outside and let it heat up, then take a blow dryer and heat one corner, slide some fishing line in and rip through the adhesive. I got it off enough to put my hand in and then just headed it then pulled a little and repeated that til it was all off. You can also use a heat gun, but you then risk bubbling paint if left on too long.

After that you have the adhesive. With this you can use a combo off Goo-Gone and you thumb to slowly strip it off, or just get an eraser wheel you attach to a drill and get rid of it quickly.

After that make sure to clean and wax.
